Philadelphia 76ers vs. Portland Trail Blazers Summer League Preview | July 15, 2024

Philadelphia 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers warms up as they battle the Portland Trail Blazers who are just starting their Summer League journey. This Summer League matchup will happen at the Thomas and Mack Center and should be a good one.

The 76ers went 1-for-2 in three games during their Salt Lake City Summer League exhibition. Therefore, the Sixers aren’t new to this game. Coming into the NBA 2K25 Summer League, the Sixers played against the Detroit Pistons and clinched a massive win (97-81) with Ricky Council IV leading the team. However, the Sixers’ 2024 rookies displayed an average performance.

The Portland Trail Blazers traded three of their 2024 draft picks, leaving their 7th overall draft pick, Donovan Clingan. Now, the Trail Blazers lost that debut Summer League game against the San Antonio Spurs (77-83). The Blazers team would try to shake things up and get their footing as they move into this second game. However, some G League Players from this Blazer could get a standard NBA contract due to how they performed. Can the Sixers maintain their winning streak in this game against the Trail Blazers?

Philadelphia 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers drafted Jared McCain with their 2024 No. 16 slot and Adem Bona with their No. 41 slot. During the team’s 2K25 Summer League debut, these rookies played decently on one side of the court to support their team’s victory. Jared McCain got 11 points, six rebounds, and two steals. McCain should work on his shooting percentage as they were below average at 28.6% in field goals (4-of-14) and 16.7% in three-pointers (1-of-6)

On the other hand, Adem Bona was mainly active on the defensive side of the game. The Sixer center got eight points, seven rebounds, and five blocks. Also, Ricky Council IV, who was one of the best players at the Salt Lake City Summer League exhibit, got 24 points, six rebounds, and two steals, shooting 41% in the field (7-of-17). Jeff Dowtin Jr. follows Ricky to clinch 18 points, eight assists, and five rebounds with 53% in field goals (7-of-13) and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe.

Portland Trail Blazers

The Blazers’ first-rounder, Donovan Clingan played a one-sided game in his debut summer league match. The center’s offensive contribution was low as he got only four points and an assist. However, defensively Clingan was alert as he grabbed 13 boards and five blocks with a steal. This performance is decent for a debut match. However, if the Blazers’ center sprinkles more offensive play to his performance it should help the team have more advantage over the opposing team.

Now, the Blazers’ best performance in this Summer League debut came from Rayan Rupert. Rupert got 13 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two steals. However, the Blazers guard should work on his three points as he made 1-of-4 attempts while on the field he got 54.5% of his shots (6-of-11). Justin Minaya followed Rupert to put up 12 points, four steals, three assists, two rebounds, and a block making 4-of-5 field goal attempts and 3-of-4 three-pointers. Minaya could pose a serious problem for the Sixers if locked in.

Possible Breakout Player of the Game

Philadelphia 76ers

Keve Aluma has been a good 6th man for the Sixer in this Summer League exhibit. The Sixers forward came off the bench for 22 minutes to get 19 points, five offensive rebounds out of eight rebounds, a block, and a steal. So far it seems Aluma improved his game after making 8-of-10 field goals, 2-of-3 three-pointers, and 1-of-1 from the foul line. Thus, if given more minutes he could create magic for the Sixers’ team.

Portland Trail Blazer

Alex Reese came off the bench for 13 minutes and bagged 16 points, three rebounds and two blocks with one steal, shooting 46.1% in the field (6-13) and 33.3% of three-pointers (3-9). Resse played in the G League where he averaged 44.2% in field goals and 41.5% three-points in 32 games. Therefore, his shooting abilities will be interesting to watch out for.
