Top 3 Underrated X-Factors Of Philadelphia 76ers’ Offseason

Philadelphia 76ers Caleb Martin

The Philadelphia 76ers 2024 offseason was the site of attraction this season due to the enormous cap size to build around Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. Interestingly, the Sixers franchise lured Paul George to build their “Big Three.” Now, what were some underrated signings this offseason that should make the Philadelphia 76ers  team a solid championship contender next year?

Kelly Oubre Jr.

The Philadelphia 76ers extended Kelly Oubre Jr.’s contract. This contract will last for two years and it’s worth 16.4 million dollars. Also, Oubre took a pay cut to extend his time with the Philadelphia 76ers. Also, his contract would end with Joel Embiid’s contract in the 2025-26 season.

Oubre Jr. showed up last season when the team needed a reliable player. Joel Embiid suffered from an injury last season which affected the overall team’s output. However, the 28-year-old small forward stepped up better than Tobias Harris who the Philadelphia 76ers franchise spent an enormous amount on in the hope of a positive impact on the team’s performance. Last season Oubre Jr. averaged 15.4 points, five rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.

The Philadelphia 76ers suffered from injury reports last season. Also, these injuries included their crucial players. Therefore, Nick Nurse gave Kelly Oubre Jr. the chance to display his balling skill on the court which he did, especially during the playoffs, and the Philly fans loved it. He shot 44.1% from the field and 31.1% from the three-point line which makes him a solid sixth player for the Sixers.

Andre Drummond

Andre Drummond will add more depth to the Philadelphia 76ers defense next season. He signed a two-year contract with the Sixers franchise that was worth 10 million dollars. Therefore with Drummond, the Sixers team can relieve the defensive burden on Joel Embiid as that led to injuries at crucial games. Also, Drummond’s contract will end in the 2025-2026 season.

Drummond didn’t play many minutes at the Chicago Bulls. However, his presence on the court helped his team maintain the flow of the game. Last season, he averaged 8.4 points and nine rebounds per game in 17 minutes with 55.6% shooting from the field.

What makes Drummond’s game interesting is his attempts at rebounds and his instinct to convert offensive rebounds into points for his team. Despite his below-average stat last season, his career average gives promising expectations from the 31-year-old center. He averaged double digits in points and rebounds throughout his career: 12.7 points and 12.4 rebounds in 864 games. Therefore with more time on the court, Andre Drummond should exceed fans’ expectations within two years.

Caleb Martin signed a four-year contract with the Sixers. This contract is worth 35 million dollars and spans through the 2026-27 season. Martin brings some qualities to the table that could help keep the Sixers’ roster healthy.

Last season with the Miami Heat, Williams averaged 10 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.2 assists. With these stats, he should serve as a good rotation piece for Paul George to maintain the momentum of the game. With the Miami Heat, the 28-year-old forward played multiple roles that improved his versatility on the court. Nurse would love to use a versatile player on the court to rest his star player and get the new signings more minutes to get attuned to his playbook.

Just like how we have “Playoff Jimmy” there should be “Playoff Cally.” Martin’s playoff performance improved in the previous years and he played better in the playoffs than in the regular season. In the 2023 regular season, Martin averaged 9.6 points with 35.6% from deep, and during the playoffs, he averaged 12.7 points with 42.3% from deep. Also in 2024, he averaged 10 ppg in the regular season with 34.9% from deep, and during the playoffs, the 6-foot-5 small forward averaged 11.6 points with 44% shooting from deep.

Philadelphia 76ers Look To Contend

It all depends on how Nurse improves his playbook and rotations next season. Concerns loom among Philly fans about the health of their trio. However, the Philadelphia 76ers franchise built vital pieces around these star players to maintain a healthy roster. Therefore Nurse needs to adjust his strategy to squeeze the best out of his team. Also, the Philadelphia 76ers are close to becoming a solid NBA title contender but it might not be next season as the roster would need to develop the chemistry to display an outstanding performance on the court.
