Philadelphia 76ers and Guerschon Yabusele Agree To One-Year Contract

Philadelphia 76ers Guerschon Yabusele

The Philadelphia 76ers have reached an agreement with Free agent Guerschon Yabusele to a one-year contract worth 2.1 million dollars, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Sunday. As a French representative in the men’s basketball competition at the Paris Olympics this summer, Yabusele helped his country win a silver medal after Team France lost to Team USA 98-87 in the final.

As one of the Olympics’ breakout stars, Yabusele played a vital role in Team France’s rallying for gold. During three games in the elimination round, he posted 22, 17, and 20 points against Canada, Germany, and the USA.

Guerschon Yabusele, who attended the 2016 NBA Draft and got selected by the Boston Celtics in the first round (16th), tested the NBA water before getting viral in the Olympics this year. He failed to make the rotation in the draft year and signed with Shanghai Sharks of China’s CBA league. In 43 games for the Sharks, he averaged 20.9 points and 9.4 rebounds, being awarded a CBA All-Star for his production with the Sharks.

Yabusele returned to the NBA after one season with the Sharks, signing with Celtics’s G-League affiliate Maine Red Claws in March 2017. He was promoted to the Celtics roster and made his NBA debut later that year. Throughout his rookie season, Yabusele showed potential, achieving career highs in rebounds, assists, and points, all during the 2017-18 season. Despite Yabusele’s efforts with the team during the 2017-18 season, his tenure with the Celtics was short-lived and waived in July 2019.

Guerschon Yabusele continued his career overseas, signing with the Nanjing Monkey Kings of the CBA in August 2019. He returned to Europe, joining ASVEL in France’s LNB Pro A in February 2020. In July 2021, Yabusele moved to Real Madrid, helping the Spanish powerhouse to win the EuroLeague title in 2023. His strong performances earned him a three-year contract extension.

Yabusele Could Earn a Spot in the Philadelphia 76ers

Yabusele averaged 9.6 points this past season and shot 43% from beyond the arc. Adding up with a convincing play with Team France in the Olympics, his name was put on the NBA trade rumors, and several teams showed interest in adding him to the roster. Other than a productive three-point shooting, Yabusele’s powerful scoring ability with dynamic physicality can immediately impact the Philadelphia 76ers.

The 76ers made one of the biggest moves in the NBA offseason, signing Paul George to a four-year maximum deal. They retained Kelly Oubre and veteran guard Kyle Lowry and signed Caleb Martin, Andre Drummond, and Eric Gordon. Considering that the team had lost its fellow Nicolas Batum and Coach Nurse is expected to start Martin, Yabusele can earn a spot with stable playing minutes with the Philadelphia 76ers.
