The Philadelphia 76ers have finally come forward with an explanation for Joel Embiid’s inability to blink his left knee. Next time, they could let us know what happened in less than a week.

The power forward is dealing with an episode of Bell’s palsy. It sounds scarier than it is, so have no fear; we will break down the neurological disorder here.

According to John Hopkins, Bell’s palsy is an unexplained episode of muscle weakness or paralysis on one side of the face. It’s rare in men in Joel Embiid’s age range but not impossible. The episodes typically last two weeks to six months.

Sometimes, all it takes is severe stress to develop Bell’s palsy, which is likely in someone as young and healthy as Embiid. Injuries and viral infections, like a cold, can also cause the condition.

Joel Embiid will likely be on the mend quickly; the long-term effects of Bell’s palsy are rare. It’s unpleasant, though. A series of migraines came on with the neurological condition, and Embiid knew something wasn’t right. Headaches, inability to blink, muscle twitching, hypersensitivity to sound, blurred vision, and loss of sensation in the affected side of the face are other common symptoms of Bell’s palsy.

No worries, though, Philadelphia 76ers fans; Joel Embiid just sees this as one more thing to overcome. He was quoted as saying,

“Yes, it’s pretty annoying. My left side of my face, my mouth and my eye. It’s been tough. But I’m not a quitter. I’m going to keep fighting through anything. It’s unfortunate, that’s the way I look at it. But it’s not an excuse. I’ve got to keep pushing.”

Joel Embiid has been making headlines for his playoff performances. Despite a sore knee and Bell’s palsy, the power forward isn’t letting anything keep him down.

He scored 50 points for the Philadelphia 76ers Thursday night in their game against the New York Knicks. That’s 40 percent of the team’s final points!

Joel Embiid is a much-needed cog in the Philadelphia 76ers’ wheel if they are to continue progressing in the playoffs.
