Pete Carroll is heading to Las Vegas to be the next head coach for the Raiders. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, he signed a three-year contract with a fourth-year team option. Carroll, 73, is one of four head coaches who led college football and NFL teams to a national championship and Super Bowl.
Las Vegas Raiders Name Pete Carroll as Head Coach
Carroll coached the Seattle Seahawks for 14 NFL seasons. He led the Seahawks to 10 playoff appearances, two conference championships, and one Super Bowl win. The Raiders fired Head Coach Antonio Pierce on January 7th after the Raiders went 4-13 in his first full year as their coach.
Carroll will be the Raiders’ fifth coach since their move to Las Vegas from Oakland in 2020. He is the winningest coach in Seahawks history, with a record of 137-89-1 and 10 playoff victories. Before moving to Seattle, Carroll was the coach at USC, where he had a nine-year run that included seven consecutive PAC-10 titles. He was also the coach of the New York Jets and New England Patriots in 1994 before getting fired.
The Seahawks named Carroll head coach in 2010 when he left USC. Now, he is moving on with Las Vegas. The Raiders are in the process of rebuilding a team and a culture that has been lost in recent years. The Raiders are hoping Carroll can turn the tide in Las Vegas.
What is Next for the Raiders?
The Raiders finished the 2024-2025 NFL season 4-13 and last in the AFC West. They went 0-6 against their division rivals and 3-9 in the conference play. They have not had much success in the head coaching department since Jon Gruden left and Josh McDaniel’s took over.
From 2003 through last season, the Raiders have had two winning seasons and an absurd 13 head coaches. Between 1976 and 1983, they won three Super Bowls, and the franchise became legendary in the process.
The Raiders used to be a dominant team when John Madden was the coach. Now, they are looking for a coach who will bring back a winning attitude and consistently lead them back to the playoffs. Time will tell if Pete Carroll can accomplish this with the Raiders.
