Pep Guardiola Reveals He Broke a Transfer Rule for Manchester City

Pep Guardiola is one of the most widely respected managers of all time. Not only does he have an exceptional track record of winning games, securing trophies, and beating other teams by incredible margins, but he is a tactician of the game. Every player he has coached has only positive things to say about how smart of a coach he is and how he is able to get the best out of every squad member.

But, that doesn’t mean he is without faults. He can lose his temper, make poor substitutes, and leave players out of squads when they are playing well. In addition to some questionable choices on the pitch, he has also made some interesting choices off of it.

Pep Guardiola admits that he broke the transfer rule when he claims to have tried to sign Gundogan from Barcelona on a ‘free’ transfer. City is avidly looking to acquire Gundogan, the German international star and midfield maestro, from the La Liga team without paying a cent. But, how can this happen?

He claims that he broke the transfer rule to bring Gundogan back from Spain so that he could come back to England and play for his team again — but, all transfers, loans, and purchases have to be regulated through the FA

However, for once, City is not in trouble with the Premier League or FA in this situation — they are just wary about signing a player who is almost getting too old to be on the pitch. Pep Guardiola broke his rules about who he should sign, but no legal stipulations. For just this time, Manchester City is in the clear.

Pep Guardiola only broke his rule about signing the 34-year-old Gundogan because he wants him back on his team so badly, despite being at a retirement age. He happily got rid of his ‘age rule’ when he heard that Gundogan was keen to come back to Manchester City, as he was also eager to re-sign the German international and bring him back to City and off Barcelona’s wage bill.

What Pep Guardiola Had to Say About Re-Signing Gundogan

As a manager, I’m not a big, big fan of re-signing players with this age, said the City boss. But I know him quite well and his mentality is right. He’s a huge competitor and with the financial situation at Barcelona, he came back on a free.We talked about that and said ‘OK, we can do it’. The negotiations between the clubs were none of my business and the salary as well. It happened and we had to try.”

Pep Guardiola, who is without one of his key players for the upcoming second match of the season, Rodri, said that Gundogan is a versatile and useful player who can also slot into midfield positions in the same way as Rodri, Kovacic, or Matheus. He would be a useful addition to the team.
