PCB Announces New Selection Committee For Upcoming Bangladesh Series

Babar azam

The PCB announced a new selection committee because a two-match Test series against Bangladesh is slated to start in the last week of August. The same committee will choose the squad for the said event. This comes after the Pakistan Cricket Board relieved former pacer Wahab Riaz and all-rounder Abdul Razzaq of their duties.

The Board cited no faith in the board’s performances. The new set includes captains of the red and white ball teams and head coaches Gary Kirsten, Jason Gillespie, Asad Shafiq, and Mohammad Yousuf. All these members shall have full voting rights and bestowed powers under mandate.

Beyond the powers of voting important figures, there are also several non-voting members, including but not limited to: Assistant Coach Azhar Mahmood, Advisor to Chairman Bilal Afzal, Manager of Analytics and Team Strategy Hassan Cheema, Director of High-Performance Nadeem Khan, Director of International Cricket Usman Wahla. Their views and expertise will be a very strong enabler in the decision-making process.

The prime task of the renovated committee will be the selection of the team for the forthcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh. The series is part of the World Test Championship 2023–25 cycle, so it is immensely important for the Pakistan team.

Following what turned out to be a miserable performance by Pakistan in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, some changes have been decided by the Pakistan cricket board in the selection committee. This brought about inadequacies that, in the long run, resulted in the axing of Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq from the panel. The PCB also declared it in a press release, and sources have termed it a move in the new direction of their policy regarding the selection process.

In a victorious statement, the PCB stated:

The Pakistan Cricket Board today confirmed that it has notified Abdul Razzaq and Wahab Riaz that their services will no longer be required in the national selection committee setup.

Abdul Razzaq was part of both the men’s and women’s selection committees, while Wahab Riaz was a member of the men’s selection committee. Soon after the report of his being asked not to continue as a member of the selection committee, the news came that Wahab Riaz would not be continuing as manager of the senior men’s team. This is one important step away from the position in PCB.

Upcoming Test Series

Bangladesh will now face Pakistan in two Test matches, the first from August 21 to 25 in Rawalpindi and the second in Karachi from August 30 to September 3. Hence, one can declare it one series everybody will have eyes on, as Bangladesh plays a test match with the newly appointed squad.

The performances of this Pakistani team in these Tests are going to mean a lot for fans as well as for analysts. The PCB wants to bring in some new blood and rejuvenate the process of team selection, and all this will be put to the test in an actual series against Bangladesh. The decisions taken by the new selection committee will determine what is next for Pakistan in international cricket.
