Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas To Play US Open Mixed Doubles

Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas will play Mixed Doubles.

Tsitsidosa is back! The real-life couple of Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas has entered the US Open mixed doubles draw. Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas have proven to be a successful team when they play mixed doubles in exhibition play, but a Grand Slam is a different challenge. The pair recently won the inaugural Mixed Madness competition during US Open Fan Week. How will they fare in this tournament?

The couple has an affinity for mixed doubles. Playing mixed doubles with different partners is how their relationship began. In March 2023 at the Eisenhower Cup mixed doubles exhibition that kicked off the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, Tsitsipas was paired with his Greek counterpart Maria Sakkari. Badosa was paired with Cameron Norrie.

The two teams played each other.  Tsitsipas and Sakkari won the match. However, the interaction at the net between Badosa and Tsitsipas sparked a romance. The pair have been dating pretty much ever since with a brief breakup in May 2024.

Third Time Looking To Be The Charm

Hopeful fans hope the third time is the charm to see Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas hit the court together at a Grand Slam. They entered two previous Grand Slam tournaments, the 2023 Wimbledon and the 2024 French Open.

At Wimbledon 2023, Badosa was still dealing with the back issue that kept her out of tennis for most of the year.  As a result, they were forced to withdraw. At the 2024 French Open, Tsitsipas was alive in men’s singles and men’s doubles (with brother Petros Tsitsipas). As a result, the pair withdrew.

Tsitsipas is not playing men’s doubles with Petros in this tournament making it easier to pick up a second event.  At the 2023 Wimbledon, he was planning to play all three events before the withdrawal.

Badosa and Tsitsipas Look To Win

It is tricky for singles players entered in doubles to win Grand Slams. The priority is singles.  If either advances far, they could be facing the possibility of playing two matches, one in each discipline per day. Worse than that, if bad weather affects the order of play, they could be faced with a crazy schedule when matches are made up. Badosa is finally healthy.  She is experiencing a great career renaissance getting back to her pre-injury form.

Tsitsipas has long been regarded as one of the best men’s players to never win a Grand Slam, finishing as a finalist at the 2021 French Open and 2023 Australian Open. Tsitsipas lost both of those matches to Novak Djokovic. He also was on the losing end of the 2024 Paris Olympics quarterfinal match to Djokovic, the eventual gold medalist.

Best Date Night Ever

After winning the Mixed Madness exhibition last week, Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas received a trophy and $250,000. Calling it the best date night ever, the two kissed the trophy. An even better date night would be to win a mixed doubles Grand Slam title particularly if it is the maiden Grand Slam for both of them.

Both have had ups and downs in the past year. Badosa’s health issues have been a dark cloud over her game and Tsitsipas recently fired his father as his coach. This pair hopes the relationship can help pull them through what has been a tumultuous stretch.

Singles Are Also Important

Badosa had a quick first-round win on Monday and will face American Taylor Townsend in the second round on Wednesday. Tsitsipas has yet to take the court.  His first-round match is a tough one. He faces Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis on Tuesday at 11 AM ET. Watch the US Open every day between August 26 and September 8. Day and night matches will be broadcast on ESPN.
