Paul Finebaum Gives Rare Compliment To Michigan Wolverines Football After Victory Over USC

Michigan Wolverines Paul Finebaum

Paul Finebaum has been a harsh critic of the Michigan Wolverines over the years. Whether it is the program itself or the head coach, the ESPN personality has not been the biggest fan of the team from Ann Arbor. However, his tune has changed after the Wolverines took down the USC Trojans on Saturday. Finebaum said after the game that the Michigan Wolverines “saved their season” and was very impressed with their victory.

Paul Finebaum Praises Michigan Wolverines

After getting blown out by the Texas Longhorns, Finebaum declared the Michigan Wolverines had no chance at making the College Football Playoff. The offense looked horrible, and the defense wasn’t as dominant as it had been in the past two years. What a difference two weeks makes. While the second half wasn’t pretty, the Wolverines pulled out the victory with a clutch final drive to take the lead in the final minute. On Sportscenter, Finebaum gave a rare compliment to the Big Ten program.

“I don’t want to reverse what I said a couple of weeks ago when I ruled Michigan out. But I think they’re back in at least contention now. They saved their entire season and I don’t think anyone could be more impressed.”

“It was just one of the greatest drives I’ve seen for a team — even though they were at home, they were playing a very good football team and I think that’s what I came out of the day even more impressed with the fact that Southern Cal plays both sides of the ball and they do it exquisitely. You can say whatever you want about the final drive but I came away really impressed with the Trojans. They didn’t get the win but they put a stamp down that they seemingly are back.”

While there is plenty to fix for Sherrone Moore’s team, the victory was impressive. USC is no slouch, and their offense made big plays when it mattered most. The Trojan defense stifled the Wolverines in the second half. If not for Will Johnson’s pick-six, the Trojans likely would have won the game handily. However, the final drive may have saved the season for Michigan.

Upcoming Schedule

The Michigan Wolverines have plenty of big games left on the schedule to build their College Football Playoff case. In a few weeks, the team will travel to Champaign, Illinois, to take on the Fighting Illini. They are coming off a huge victory against the Nebraska Cornhuskers on the road. A couple of weeks later, the Oregon Ducks come to the Big House. Then the Wolverines will look to make it four straight over the Ohio State Buckeyes in the final game of the season. If they can win two out of those three games, the team might have a good enough case for an at-large bid for the playoff.

There is plenty to fix for the Michigan Wolverines. Passing for 32 yards in an entire game is not a recipe for repeated success. Michigan will look to improve next week when the Minnesota Golden Gophers come to town.
