The Atlanta Falcons finally get a proven pass rusher, as they acquire Matthew Judon via trade. The New England Patriots receive a 2025 third-round pick and ship off the disgruntled veteran.
Judon was holding out this offseason for a new contract, as the 31-year-old will likely get a long-term deal done with his new team. Getting the four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher is a move to go all in for the next few years and checks off a big-time need for their defense.
Atlanta Falcons Trade for Veteran Matthew Judon
The Atlanta Falcons have desperately needed a proven pass rusher at the edge position and finally get him in Matthew Judon. Vic Beasley from 2016 is their last double-digit sack artist with 15.5 sacks that season. New head coach Raheem Morris gets his defensive blue-chip type player to lean on.
Their starters heading into the year were going to be Arnold Ebiketie, a former second-round pick from 2022, and veteran Lorenzo Carter. Now, Judon will headline the group that has been dead last in sacks for a decade and is coming off two double-digit sack seasons in the last three years.
New England Patriots Receive 2025 3rd Rounder
According to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, the Chicago Bears were also interested in acquiring Matthew Judon. However, the Falcons will acquire him and send the Patriots a 2025 3rd-round pick, along with a pay raise. Judon will now get it with his third team entering his ninth NFL season.
Atlanta takes on his $6.5 million base salary till Judon gets the extension he was seeking. The Falcons recently lost rookie third-round pick Bralen Trice for the season due to a torn ACL. With a new head coach in Jerod Mayo who took on a young roster, it was pivotal to get draft capital in a transition year.
