The Las Vegas Raiders may be a long way away from the “Commitment to Excellence” era of the 1970s and early 1980s. However, the team is moving ever closer to someone who knows all about what it takes to succeed in the NFL.
The spirit of longtime owner Al Davis still permeates the club’s culture. Currently, his son Mark Davis, holds the reins of the team as principal owner.
Last May, Davis agreed to bring aboard seven-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Tom Brady as a minority owner. Ten-plus months later, that deal has yet to be approved by the league.
Goodell delivers positive update on Brady joining the Raiders
At the NFL Annual League Meetings, league commissioner Roger Goodell gave an update on the prospect of Brady joining the Raiders ownership group.
In order for Brady to become a minority owner of the team, three-fourths of current NFL owners must approve the sale. Goodell noted that the process has been needfully long, saying:
“We go through a very thorough process on all initial transfers, so we’re just going through that process. We’ve been in touch with their side and the Raiders. I think it’s making progress.”
Goodell brushed away suggestions that the sale process has been delayed.
Brady seeks to acquire 10 percent stake in Raiders
The Las Vegas Raiders are currently valued at $5.8 million, according to Sportico. The group that Brady is involved with seeks to buy an approximate 10 percent stake in the Raiders. However, Brady himself is reported to account for seven percent of that investment.
It was reported last October that the NFL financial committee was concerned about Davis offering a discounted price to Brady. However, in February, the asking price for the stake Brady seeks was adjusted. That adjustment brought the price in line with the market value of the team.
Brady is also part owner of the Las Vegas Aces of the WNBA.
