Broncos Sign Patrick Surtain II To Massive $96 Million Extension

Broncos sign Patrick Surtain II to massive extension

The Denver Broncos, according to NFL Network Ian Rapoport, have inked Patrick Surtain II to a four-year, $96 million extension that includes $77.5 million guaranteed earlier today. How will this lucrative contract work out for both sides?

The Broncos drafted Patrick Surtain,23, in 2021 with the ninth overall pick. In his first three years, he has exceeded all expectations and is widely considered to be the best cornerback in the NFL. In his three-year career, he has logged 7 interceptions and 36 passes defended. He is a two-time Pro Bowler and a cornerstone of a rebuilding project in Denver.

The signing comes at a time when the Broncos organization has committed to getting younger and more athletic.  The Broncos will be starting a rookie Quarterback, Bo Nix, on opening day for the first time since John Elway in 1983. One of the keys to the success of a rookie quarterback is a solid defense. By signing Surtain, the Denver Broncos have invested heavily in securing a solid defensive foundation.

The Deal

Surtain was set to become a free agent at the end of the 2025 season. The Broncos could have exercised the right to franchise tag him for the 2026 season as well. The decision was made, however, to sign him, this year, to the richest defensive back deal in league history. The extension is a four-year deal worth $96 million, $24 million a year, and $77.5 million in guaranteed money. This secures him as Denver Bronco through the 2028 season.

The most recent large signing of a defensive was when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers secured Safety Antoine Winfield to a four-year deal worth 84.1 million, with $45 million guaranteed. The signing of Surtain speaks volumes of what the Broncos believe about the importance of a true “lockdown” cornerback. General Manager George Paton hinted that a deal may be on the horizon sooner rather than later,

“We’re all big fans of Pat,” Paton stated at the end-of-the-year press conference. “We’re going to have a big meeting in a couple of weeks, and kind of go through the entire roster, for Pat included.  But we want Pat here for a long time.”  Patrick Surtain II is now in Denver for a long time with a record-breaking deal in hand.

Broncos Set To Begin Regular Season

The second year of the Sean Payton era in Denver begins on Sunday when they visit the Seattle Seahawks. Denver is looking to break an eight-year playoff drought and Surtain will be an integral part of the team in 2024 and beyond.
