Paris Saint-German vs. Brest: Preview

Paris Saint-Germain will aim to continue their perfect start to the 2024-25 Ligue 1 season when they face Brest at home on Saturday evening. PSG has struggled at home in recent seasons, and they aim to secure back-to-back home wins for the first time in 2024. They haven’t achieved consecutive league victories at the Parc des Princes since December.

Brest, facing the challenge of replicating their impressive Champions League run from last season, started poorly but showed improvement with their win over Saint-Etienne. Brest will soon face tough European competition, including matches against Bayer Leverkusen, Real Madrid, and Barcelona.

PSG, who have won all three of their league games so far, last defeated Lille 3-1 before the international break. Brest, meanwhile, secured their first victory of the season with a 4-0 win over Saint-Etienne, following earlier losses to Marseille and Lens. Despite missing Kylian Mbappe, PSG has managed to stay on top of the table, with their only blemish being a legal dispute with Mbappe over £46m in unpaid wages.

The reigning champions began their campaign impressively, defeating Le Havre 4-1 and Montpellier HSC 6-0, before their win against Lille, where Vitinha and Bradley Barcola scored early goals. Edon Zhegrova’s goal for Lille was countered by Randal Kolo Muani’s late strike, securing PSG’s third consecutive victory. With nine points from nine, PSG leads the Ligue 1 standings, though they are closely followed by Marseille, Nantes, Monaco, Lens, Lille, and Le Havre.

Brest has a poor track record against PSG, having not won any of their last 25 Ligue 1 encounters with them. Their last victory against PSG came 43 years ago. In this game where PSG are most likely to dominate the ball possession and other stats, Brest will look for opportunities to upset the Parisians on the counter-attacks.

Team News

PSG’s injury list includes Goncalo Ramos (ankle), Presnel Kimpembe (Achilles), and Lucas Hernandez (ACL). Nuno Mendes, who missed the Lille game with a virus, has recovered to play for Portugal, but Vitinha is doubtful with an ankle injury, and Warren Zaire-Emery has a calf problem.

Brest’s Julien Le Cardinal may be replaced by Borussia Dortmund loanee Soumaila Coulibaly due to an injury issue. Other concerns for Brest include Bradley Locko (Achilles) and Pierre Lees-Melou (leg fracture). New signings Massadio Haidara and Mama Balde will provide additional depth, with Haidara competing with Jordan Amavi for the left-back position.
