Star Michigan Rookie Retires from Packers

Packers

Bad news for the Packers. On May 13, Trente Jones was placed on the reserve/retired list. He signed with the Packers on April 30th, and just 13 days later, he retired. General Manager Brian Gutekunst made the announcement Monday.

What happened with this offensive lineman who once said about himself, “I’m that guy”?

Jones attended a Packer’s Mini Camp this past weekend and made the decision yesterday. In a video on his YouTube channel, Jones answers the question of why for us. He claims he could, at some point, come back to football.

Jones says he injured his back and has decided to retire to avoid the risk of further injury. He says the “situation” is such that he could heal, come back, and possibly get injured again.  He likens his leave to a “sort of medical leave.” The risk of repeat injury is a valid concern for NFL players.

Jones sounds positive in his YouTube video. But wow, what decision to make.  It had to be a tough one. Jones may come back according to NFL rules.  Being on the reserve/retired list means the Packers have the right to hold onto his contract until it expires.

Rough Start for Jones

Jones had a slow start with his college career at the University of Michigan. Maybe we can blame at least some of this on Covid in 2020, but in an interview, Jones admits it was rough for him in the beginning.

He said, “Maybe I didn’t fully understand college football in the beginning.” As he began to understand more and improve, he gained confidence. He is quoted as stating that he began to think, “I’m that guy; I’m about to be that guy.” You can hear the excitement in his voice as he describes his enthusiastic outlook.

Jones finished his college football career strong, playing on the two-time Joe Moore Award-winning Michigan offensive line.  The NFL Rookie’s overview reports Jones as “talented enough to play tackle or guard and is rarely beaten by his opponent.”

Who’s New on the Packers Roster?

At the same time, Jones was being placed on the retired list, the Packers signed defensive lineman Spencer Waege. Waege was originally signed by the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent in May 2023. The 49ers released Waege last spring but signed him to the training squad on November 15, 2023. Read more about the 49ers’ 2024 draft here.

Waege is a two-time All-American, playing for North Dakota State for five seasons due to Covid in 2020 before coming to the Packers as an unsigned free agent. Read more here. The Green Bay Packers have a 90-player roster, and even with the addition of Waege, they are still short one player.
