The Ottawa Senators have locked up Goaltender Linus Ullmark long-term, signing him to a four-year, $33 million deal, with an annual cap hit of $8.25 million. Trading for him in the summer was a gamble in the first place, considering Ullmark was entering the final year of his deal. Now that he has signed, the risk has paid off, at least on paper. The Ottawa Senators are looking to make the playoffs for the first time since 2017 and get their season underway on Thursday in Ottawa.
Ottawa Senators Finally Have True No.1 In Ullmark
No disrespect to the netminders of the past, but the Ottawa Senators have been inconsistent between the pipes for a long time. Trading for Linus Ullmark in the summer was a bold move, and proved that this new ownership will do whatever they can to make the next step. This signing now proves that they will spend whatever they can. The contract kicks in at the start of the 25-26 season.
Ullmark was drafted 163rd overall in 2012 by the Buffalo Sabres and is in the last year of a four-year contract he signed with the Boston Bruins. Ullmark won the Vezina Trophy in 2022-23, finishing the season with a 1.89 goals against average (GAA), and a .928 save percentage (SV%) in 49 games. Ullmark split duties in Boston with Goaltender Jeremy Swayman, who ironically signed for the same salary earlier this week.
Ottawa Senators fans have seen this movie before. A new season, full of optimism and belief. It will take more than a few signings to make the city believe, but signing Ullmark shows that the window has now been extended by five years, giving the Sens a great opportunity to make the next step.
