Ohio State Golf is a Cut Above in 2024

golf

The men’s and women’s Ohio State golf teams are good this year. They play at a course designed by Jack Nicklaus (a Buckeye and the greatest golfer ever). They are lucky to play on that course and benefit from Nicklaus’s support. Like the previous articles on so-called ‘non-revenue’ college sports, we will review the roster and schedule of these teams. It is worth noting at the outset that the season has started for both the men and women golfers at Ohio State.

Neil Shipley

Before we start, it is a good idea to write about the most successful golfer in Ohio State history. Neil Shipley, after his Ohio State career, was the low amateur at the Masters Tournament, where he made the cut and beat Tiger Woods. Shipley is currently playing on the PGA Tour, maybe capitalizing on his performance at the Masters. There is no question Ohio State misses him and benefits from the fact he golfed there. Shipley is the most accomplished golfer since Jack Nicklaus at Ohio State.

Men’s Golf Schedule at Ohio State in 2024

The Ohio State golf team had their first tournament on September 9th to 11th, 2024, at the Folds of Honor Collegiate Golf Tournament, and they came in seventh place. Ohio State also played in The Tindall (where they also came in seventh) and The Blessings Collegiate Invitational, where they came in sixth place of ten teams.

The men’s team is currently playing in the Barbara Nicklaus Cup. The first half of the season ends with the East Lake Cup on October 28th to 30th. They pick up again in February with the Puerto Rico Invitational, the Colleton River Collegiate, the Linger Longer Invitational, the Valspar Intercollegiate Invitational, the Buckeye Classic, the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate, and ending with the Big Ten Championship in April 2025. Two of the last three tournaments are at home, on the Ohio State course.

Men’s Golf Roster at Ohio State in 2024

Sep 28, 2024; East Lansing, Michigan, USA; Ohio State Buckeye fans cheer in the first half at Spartan Stadium on Saturday.

There are 10 players on the men’s roster in 2024. They are Timotej Formanek, a freshman; Tyler Groomes, a junior; Vaughn Harber, a freshman; Drew Mulcahy, a senior; Topher Reed, a junior; Tyler Sabo, a sophomore; Jacob Tarkany, a junior; Jack Vojtko, a sophomore; Joe Wilson IV, a junior; and Jaime Yzaga, a freshman. All but one of these players will be back next season for Ohio State. They should be back and better next season.

Women’s Golf Schedule at Ohio State in 2024

The Ohio State women’s golf team plays slightly different tournaments than the men. Also, the women golfers get scored in the same tournament after one day. This is different than the men. The Lady Buckeye golfers have already scored on eight tournament days. They started with the same Folds of Honor Championship as the men, but the women came in second on the first day and in third place on the second and third days.

Other women’s golf tournaments that have already happened include The Blessings Invitational and the Barbara Nicklaus Cup. Upcoming for the Lady Buckeyes include The Jim West Challenge this October, The Therese Hession Regional Challenge in February, followed by The Spartan Suncoast Invitational, The Darius Rucker Invitational, The Clemson Challenge, and The Therese Hession Buckeye Invitational. At the end of the season, the Ohio State women’s team has the Big Ten, NCAA Regionals, and NCAA Championships.

Women’s Golf Roster at Ohio State in 2024

The women’s golf team has only six players on it. They are Kavya Ajjarapu, a sophomore; Faith Choi, a senior; Kary Hollenbaugh, a junior; Marina Joyce-Moreno, a freshman; Nellie Ong, another freshman; and Mandy Song, yet another freshman. The women have a relatively young roster. They have done surprisingly well despite their youth and small size.

Conclusion

Golf at Ohio State has a great tradition. Both the men’s and women’s golf teams at Ohio State should do better next season than they will do this season, something which fanbases can look forward to.
