Oscar Piastri won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, but the race ended in controversy when Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz crashed in the race’s final two laps. This win is the second career Grand Prix win for Piastri and was a great end of the weekend for McLaren.
Intense Duel with Leclerc
Oscar Piastri, who has twice won at the Grand Prix, began the race second on the starting line and passed Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc on the 20th lap. Leclerc, with the improved start, seized an early lead, but he, in his endeavor, overtook him on the inside at the first lap of the first corner. From that point, the two drivers raced each other while Leclerc tried overtaking Hartley and almost caught up with him for thirty laps.
In the meantime, this race resulted in being even more lucky for his teammate Lando Norris, who started P15 and managed to finish P04 after being involved in two position overtakes in the last two corners. Norris was instrumental in his support of Oscar Piastri by ensuring that Perez did not make his pit stop at the same time as Oscar Piastri; thus, the Australian could position himself nicely to attack Leclerc.
Oscar Piastri’s Second Win Amid Drama
In the last third of the race, it was three laps, and finally, Oscar Piastri prevailed over Leclerc’s DRS and got away for the win. But the race was otherwise eventful when, during the last laps, Perez and Sainz crashed into each other. Because of that, Leclerc attempted to overtake the Mexican on lap 50, thus turning him wide and allowing Sainz to approach. The two drivers raced each other down straight, and both ended in a crash when they hit the wall. This resulted in the production of the yellow flags, which halted the race under the circumstances that the race was over.

With his win and Norris’ fourth-place finish, McLaren now leads the Constructors’ Championship, pulling ahead of Red Bull by 20 points. The result adds to Max Verstappen’s woes, as Norris overtook him on the 49th lap, cutting into his championship lead. Reflecting on his victory, he said,
After the stop it felt like we had a bit of extra grip and I had to go for it, I knew if I didn’t get past at the start of the stint I was never going to get past, Piastri said.
The McLaren star also praised the team’s progress, saying that
I think considering where we started when I joined the team last year, we were literally last and now we’re leading the world championship. It’s a credit to the team for the turnaround in the last 18 months ago, and they’ve improved me as well. It’s a massive team effort and I’m excited to see what the future holds.
He talks about the journey with McLaren since he joined the team. The team’s performance was extremely poor. However, they emphasized the problems drivers were facing, and they overcame lots of their issues and are leading the world championship.
