Olympics Women’s 200m Semifinals-Who Wins?

The Olympics women's 200m final should be a great race.

The Olympics women’s 200M semifinals in Paris, France are finally upon us — but what can we expect from the field? There are a few clear favorites of who we think is going to come out and leave the field in the dust, but, as we saw in the 100M finals, anything can happen. Clear favorites can come second or third, or not even take the starting line at all. How will the Olympics women’s 200m unfold?

Gabrielle Thomas: A Favorite In Event

Gabrielle Thomas is a name that every track and field lover has heard in the last few years. She is a phenomenal Harvard graduate who rose to fame at the same time as Sha’carri Richardson, but somehow eclipsed the speed demon on the 200M to claim it as “her event.” She has consistently posted the best times throughout the years and looks to be the clear favorite heading into the semis.

She is the favorite in terms of odds and betting to win this event, with her consistent sub-22 second times giving her at least a 70% chance of winning gold in the Olympics women’s 200m this year at the Paris Olympics. Gabrielle Thomas is a 27-year-old athletics star from Northampton Massachusetts who went to Harvard University and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Standing at 5-foot-10, she is an imposing and lean figure who glides effortlessly around the track as she sprints the 200-meter race.

Her personal bests in the 200m is a 21.60 posted at the Eugene Nationals last year in 2023, with her best 100m time coming in at 11 seconds at the same event in 2021. She earned a bronze medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and a silver medal in the 4x100m relay at the 2020 Olympics. Last year at the World Championships in Budapest, she earned silver in the 200m race and gold in the 4×100 m relay with her teammates.

St. Lucian Julien Alfred In Contention

The only other person who has a chance of getting even close to her to potentially rob the gold medal in the Olympics women’s 200M is the St. Lucian sprinter Julien Alfred, who already took home the gold medal in the 100M final to edge out Richardson. Julien Alfred is a 23-year-old sprinter from Ciceron, Castries, St. Lucia who went to school at the University of Texas.

She has a 10.72 100m personal best, which she just ran a few days ago, and a 21.86 personal best in the 200m, which she ran in London in 2024. She won gold in the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow this year in the 60 meters and also won gold last year in the Central American and Caribbean Games in the 100m.

Although it seems as if Alfred is faster off the mark, Thomas might have the upper hand when it comes to the Olympics Women’s 200m semifinals. She has more practice in that specific event and seems to pick up speed as the race goes on, whereas Alfred might have a better start than Thomas.

Olympics Women’s 200M Semifinal Results

In the Olympics women’s 200M, Thomas posted a time of 21.86 seconds in the second heat, winning it by a clear margin. Julian Alfred won the first heat of the semifinals, coming in at 21.98 seconds and beating the rest of her heat by a slim margin. The final takes place tomorrow, with other contenders such as M. Long, J. Gbai from the Ivory Coast, and D. Asher-Smith from Great Britain contending for medals. The Olympics women’s 200m should be a great race and the world will wait on whom will be crowned the winner.
