Maybe it was the fact that they are the home country, or maybe they are just in great form, but France shocked the world when they ran rampant over Egypt in a resounding win that saw them reach the Olympics finals for the first time in over four decades. They will face off against one of the best teams on the men’s and women’s side, Spain, to see who will bring home the gold medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Olympics Semifinals: France vs. Egypt
In the nail-biting Olympics semifinal of France vs. Egypt, nobody knew who was going to progress. France had the support of being the home country behind them and had talented players like Lacazette and Mateta, but Egypt was a resounding underdog who has performed well in recent major tournaments.
France was able to come out on top and earn three points due to goals from Mateta and Olise. Despite Egypt scoring first through Saber, giving France their first conceded goal in the Olympics, they came back with a vengeance and showed their determination to win the game. Mateta was surely the man of the match, as he scored two to put his side ahead and give them a cushion of two goals that would see them reach the final round.
The manager, Thierry Henry, was delighted at the result.
“What a night! All credit to the players. Egypt were really good today but we never stopped going after the win and the fans pushed us forward. We have secured a medal now but we have one more step to go to win our first football gold medal after 40 years. Now Spain awaits us in the final and it’s going to be a big game.”
Even though France made it through to the Olympics final match, Egypt can still hold their heads high. They had more shots on goal in the first half than the Bleus and held France to limited shots on target throughout the game. France even hit the woodwork three times in the match, giving the Olympic fans tons of drama.
Mateta, the goal scorer, was thrilled with the outcome and couldn’t believe that he had scored two goals for his side.
“This was the night of my dreams,” Mateta said. “But I need one more night now to keep dreaming. This is for the fans, they kept chanting even after we went behind in the score.”
France vs. Spain: Olympics Final
France now face off against Spain in the Olympics final match, due to Spain beating Morocco 2-1 in a comeback victory. Lopez and Sanchez both got on the scoresheet for their country, with the latter coming just five minutes before the full time whistle. France and Spain will now challenge one another in the gold medal match at the Olympics to see who will come out on top.
Spain is used to making the semifinals and finals of the Olympics, as they were in the gold medal match last time, but lost to Brazil. However, this will be the first time in a long time for France, as they have only won a gold medal back in the Los Angeles games in 1984.
The gold medal match of the Olympics will take place on Friday at 12pm ET, with the bronze medal game between Morocco and Egypt kicking off on Thursday at 11am ET. Make sure you tune in from wherever you are watching to see what countries will bring home medals, and which will go home empty handed.
