The Olympics are a time for people to come together and respect one another, seeing which country can come out on top in certain sports. But, for some, the heat of the moment becomes too much and they let their anger and frustrations get the best of them. This is exactly what happened with the latest Olympic soccer match between Argentina and France, seeing the hosts narrowly make it to the next round of their home tournament.
Argentina vs. France Olympic Soccer Game
Argentina faced off against France, in more ways than one, to see who could come out on top in the Olympic soccer match. The Frenchman, fortunately for the home country, won in the quarterfinal that saw them progress in the international competition. Argentina had to pack its bags to go home after losing a tense 1-0 game against the French men, which ended in a huge brawl on the pitch.
The fight was so dramatic and intense that even the coaches got involved, bringing the technical staff, managers, and physios off of both benches to get involved in the scuffle. Just a few moments after the final whistle blew during the tense match, the benches cleared and the players fought in a tense brawl with one another due to an ‘unfair’ VAR call at the end of the game.
France Celebration
Eyewitnesses and other reports state that Millot, the French midfielder who was a key part of the Olympic soccer game, celebrated the win against the Argentine team a little too zealously, causing them to retaliate. The Argentine technical staff, players, and coaches rushed onto the field to confront Enzo Millot as he rubbed the dramatic win in the opposing team’s face.
Even the manager, Theirry Henry – on Arsenal and French legend of the game — admitted the behavior from his player was wrong. He admitted that his player had been shown a red card and he was chastised by the coach for his unfair treatment of the opposing team and lack of sportsmanship on the greatest stage.
“I apologize for the final disturbance. It’s not what I wanted and I couldn’t control it. Enzo Millot received a red card after the match. That’s not helpful. I don’t like this kind of thing. I’m not happy about it.”
France vs. Argentina Stats
France beat Argentina with a narrow 1-0 victory that sees them move into the semifinals in their home country to face off against Egypt to see who will come out on top. Luckily for France, they beat the South American side that were missing two key players in the quarterfinals; Simeone and Beltran.
The game was filled with close calls and shots on goal that made it seem like anyone could take advantage and win the game. In the 102nd minute, Mateta hit the bar, which was almost the last play of the entire match. And just a few minutes earlier in the 99th minute, Beltran had an easy scoring opportunity but hit the ball over the goal.
Argentina Had Chances
Argentina had tons of chances late in the Olympics soccer game that would have seen them draw the game level, but they squandered their shots. Throughout the game, Argentina had almost 70% possession vs. France’s 30%, showing just how dominant they are in their buildup play. They also allowed 16 shots from Argentina throughout the match.
France only had three shots on target and three wide shots during the Olympic soccer game. Argentina had four shots on target and seven wide, showing they got forward much more than the French team. But, the only thing that matters at the end of the day is that France was more clinical with their three shots on goal, getting one in the back of the net. The Olympic soccer games are some of the most entertaining matches of the competition – stay tuned for more.
