The Oklahoma City Thunder are among the most exciting and explosive teams in the NBA. After finishing last season as the youngest team to earn a No. 1 seed, the team is looking to make even more history. Though the team fell short of a championship last season, they are undoubtedly one of the favorites to win it all this year.
Following a regular season record of 57-25, the Oklahoma City Thunder will have ample work and winning to do if they want to recreate their success. While tough matchups and other obstacles stand in the way, Oklahoma City fans have a lot to look forward to for this season.
Here are some of their most intriguing matchups for the 2024-2025 season.
Best in the West Season Opener
OKC Thunder @ Denver Nuggets (Oct 24, 2024)
Though the Thunder earned the number one seed in the Western Conference last season, the Denver Nuggets finished with the same record. According to their records, the two teams were in the top 5 in the NBA and featured two MVP candidates. Nikola Jokic, center for the Nuggets, brought home his third MVP last season, while Shai Gilgeous Alexander, guard for the Thunder, came up just short. This game will act as both team’s first contest of the year and will likely cause fireworks.
West Juggernauts Recollide
OKC Thunder @ Denver Nuggets (Nov 6, 2024)
Just 13 days after their first matchup, the Thunder will pack up again and head to Denver for a primetime game. One of Oklahoma City’s best players, Chet Holmgren, along with offseason addition Isaiah Hartenstein, will have their hands full in these games with little time between matchups against one of the best frontcourts in the NBA. Though Oklahoma City won three out of four matchups last season, both games will be a test for the Thunder. Can they dominate the series like they did last year?
Opportunity for Revenge
Dallas Mavericks @ OKC Thunder (Nov 17, 2024)
Not even two weeks after their rematch against the reigning MVP, Oklahoma City will have a chance to redeem themselves. After finishing as the team in the Western Conference, the Thunder were expected to go all the way to the championship. However, a talented Dallas Mavericks team led by Luka Doncic eliminated the team in the semifinals. The two teams meet again for the first time since last season in the middle of November, and it will be a substantial test for both teams. The Mavericks brought in four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson over the offseason, and the rematch will feature new signings on both sides.
Generational Stars Clash In NBA Cup
OKC Thunder @ San Antonio Spurs (Nov 19th, 2024)
Two days after their chance at revenge, the Oklahoma City Thunder head south for another matchup against a superstar. Victor Wembanyama, last season’s ROTY, leads a young and hungry San Antonio Spurs team. The two squads will collide in hopes of potentially winning the NBA Cup. The league recently adopted the in-season tournament, and it has come close to recreating a playoff-like atmosphere. The Spurs brought in former all-star Chris Paul over the offseason and drafted college standout Stephon Castle. There will undoubtedly be no lack of star power and electricity in this matchup.
Possible Western Conference Champ. Preview
Minnesota Timberwolves @ OKC Thunder (Dec 31, 2024)
On the last day of 2024, two teams with championship aspirations meet as a possible preview of what is to come. The Timberwolves, led by the explosive young star Anthony Edwards, finished last season just short of making their goals come true. After also being eliminated by the Dallas Mavericks in the playoffs, both teams ended their seasons alike. With countless stars and exciting personalities, this game has the potential to be an all-time classic. Shai Gilgeous Alexander for the Thunder will also be looking to earn his first MVP award towards the end of the season, and winning a premier game like this would certainly help his case.
Possible NBA Finals Preview
Boston Celtics @ OKC Thunder (Jan 5, 2025)
Not even a week into the new year, a matchup between the Thunder and the defending champions will have NBA fans on the edge of their seat. With the possibility of being a Finals preview, this game will prove who is the best. While the Celtics did not bring much change in the offseason, the Oklahoma City Thunder made some noise. Bringing in veterans like Isaiah Hartenstein and Alex Caruso while drafting one of the top prospects in the NBA draft, Nikola Topic, the Thunder made necessary upgrades in hopes of finally getting over the hump. The Celtics will be the team to beat after dominantly winning last year’s NBA championship.
Aspirations and Future
An NBA championship is unquestionably the biggest goal for the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2024-2025 NBA season. Since transitioning from the Seattle Supersonics in 2008, only one Thunder team has made it to the NBA Finals. In 2012, Oklahoma City had three future MVPs on their team and advanced to the finals against the Miami Heat. Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden made for a talented team, but in the end, it was not good enough to bring a championship to Oklahoma City.
With a new core and one of the brightest futures in the NBA, the Thunder should be one of the best teams in the league for years to come. Though it is uncertain if this team will be able to get the organization over the hump, they have one of the best chances they might ever have.
