The Ohio State Buckeyes are heading into another season under Ryan Day. He will be at the helm of the Buckeyes for his sixth year. Of course, there are many questions surrounding Ohio State going into 2024. They have won 11 games or more in the last several years, but have not beaten the Michigan Wolverines since 2019.
That is the main goal, but they have not accomplished that or reached the Big Ten Championship Game in five seasons. One veteran running back is poised to have a big season for Ohio State in TreVeyon Henderson. The senior running back is in his final year. After failing to meet expectations a year ago, the team believes in a ‘National Championship or Bust’ motto.
Ohio State RB Aims For Big Senior Season
TreVeyon Henderson will likely be the starting running back for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Last season in 2023, the senior running back carried the ball 156 times for 926 yards and 11 touchdowns. The previous season (2022) was a down year for Henderson as he did not see much action due to foot injuries.
In their Cotton Bowl appearance, TreVeyon Henderson only totaled 72 yards on 19 carries. The offense struggled against the Missouri Tigers. Former Buckeyes wideout Marvin Harrison Jr did not play in the game, choosing to sit out to prepare for the 2024 NFL Draft.
Ohio State 2024 Season
Ohio State enters 2024 ranked at #2 in the AP preseason poll. Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes spent over $20 million in NIL money last season. While some players (Emeka Egbuka, Jack Sawyer, JT Tuimoloau) have committed to staying in Columbus, Ryan Day brought in several top-tier transfers to eventually win the big game at the end of the season.
With the new 12-team playoff format, the Buckeyes have an opportunity to finally reach the College Football Playoffs. Their upcoming 2024 schedule is in their favor with the first three games including Akron, Western Michigan, and Marshall before conference action starts against the Michigan State Spartans in October.
Big Ten Conference Realignment
The Big Ten has added four teams to its conference in 2024. With the Pac-12 out of the picture, teams such as Oregon, Washington, USC, and UCLA have now joined the Big Ten. This realignment gives the league 18 teams. Opponents will have to travel farther for away games on both sides.
It makes each schedule more difficult when it comes to winning games and competing for a conference title. Ohio State will crossover and only play one of its newest Big Ten members on October 12 against the Oregon Ducks. The biggest challenge will be in ‘The Game” at the Horseshoe. The Buckeyes are looking to break their three-game losing streak to Michigan in November.
If they can get the job done through that matchup, a Big Ten Championship appearance and a spot in the College Football Playoff could be reached. Ryan Day has everything in front of him, but if he does not exceed expectations, his time in Columbus may be coming to an end in 2024.
