Ohio State may make it back to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. If they do, it will be because of their very talented running backs this year on their football team. They have the two-headed monster of Quinshon Judkins and Trevyon Henderson. Judkins transferred from the University of Mississippi to the Ohio State University before this season.
Trevyon Henderson is a returning player. Both are preseason All-Americans. James Peoples is a very talented freshman from Texas on the team. He got 6 carries for 30 yards and a touchdown) in Ohio State’s season-opening win against Akron.
Quinshon Judkins: Ohio State Running Back

Judkins transferred to Ohio State from the University of Mississippi before this season began. At Ole Miss he was a workhorse, tallying 251 carries in his freshman season and 237 carries in his sophomore season. As a freshman at Ole Miss, he averaged 5.9 yards per carry and as a sophomore his production dipped to 4.4 yards a carry. Was tired from all of those carries?
Two facts that are certain though. First, the fact that he transferred is not all that surprising – transfers are becoming more and more common in college football. Second, at Ohio State, he will not have to carry the ball nearly as much.
Trevyon Henderson
Ohio State was already strong at running back before the Judkins transfer, with Henderson returning to the Buckeyes. Henderson is a preseason All-American, and a threat to score every time he touches the ball. He is a senior who carried the ball 167, 107, and 137 times in his first three years. He averaged 7.0, 5.3, and 6.2 yards per carry in each of his first three years respectively. He has also scored 32 touchdowns in his career. There are some concerns with his durability, but with a skilled running back in Judkins also in the backfield, he will not need to carry the ball much as much as in years past.
The Other Running Backs At Ohio State
Peoples, the freshman from Texas had a performance (in limited duty) in the first game that was reminiscent of another great Ohio State running back from the state of Texas – JK Dobbins. We will see what the future holds for Peoples, but the early returns are good. The other running back, another freshman, is Sam Williams-Dixon. He is from Ohio and is currently the fourth-string running back. It is not ideal to have only four running backs on the roster, but Judkins and Henderson are a rare breed.
Buckeyes Offensive Line
By far the weakest part of the 52-6 victory over the University of Akron on August 31, 2024, was the offensive line play and specifically their run blocking. The line was without their All-American Guard Donovan Jackson, but that is no excuse for the shoddy run blocking. One way to ensure Ohio State’s talented running backs have subpar seasons, or get injured, is to have poor run blocking on the Offensive Line. It is a good thing Jackson will be back for the next game against Western Michigan because the unit needs him. They will need him to perform all season if Judkins and Henderson are to be successful.
