The Indian Premier League (IPL) has set October 31, 2024, as the deadline for all ten franchises to confirm their retention for the major auction for the 2025 season. Franchisees must pay ₹18 crore, ₹14 crore, and ₹11 crore for the first three retentions, then ₹18 crore and ₹14 crore for the last two. The teams will have to pay four crore to sign an uncapped player.

If a player makes his international debut before October 31, he will be considered capped. However, if the franchise retains him as an uncapped player and makes his international debut before the IPL deadline, he will be considered uncapped. And the team will only lose INR 4 crore in revenue. The BCCI has announced that the total purse for all teams has been increased by 33.34 percent to INR 120 crore for the tournament.

IPL RTM Changes

According to the rules announced by the BCCI on Saturday following a meeting of the IPL Governing Council in Bengaluru, A maximum of five capped players (India/Overseas) and two uncapped Indians may be retained by IPL franchises from their 2024 roster. “It is up to the IPL franchise to decide on a retention and RTM mix,” according to the IPL announcement. The six retentions/RTMs can include up to five capped players and two uncapped players.”

“The BCCI has made substantial modifications to the way the RTM option is played during the auction. Previously, the team could simply agree to match the highest bid amount during the auction to get the player. However, this time, the highest bidder will be given one more option to further boost their bid before the team holding the RTM claims the player,” reveals the report. The IPL also reinstated the “uncapped player” criterion for the auction, which had been removed in 2021.

IPL Auction Timeline

According to the rule, as outlined in the IPL statement issued on Saturday, “a capped Indian player will become uncapped.” If the player has not played in the starting XI in International Cricket (Test match, ODI, Twenty20 International) or does not have a Central Contract with the BCCI for the five years that the relevant Season is held in advance of the relevant year,” This pertains solely to Indian players.

As a result, the regulation will allow the Chennai Super Kings to keep their former captain MS Dhoni, who last played an international game in the 2019 World Cup and announced his retirement a year later as an uncapped player. More than 500 or nearly 600 players could be part of the mega-auctions, but the ultimate total and identities will be revealed only after all franchises declare their retentions.

Final Thoughts

The IPL mega-auctions may take place in the third or fourth week of November, although this has yet to be verified. As usual, the auction procedure will last two days, with hundreds of players going under the hammer. The mega auctions for this season, like the IPL 2024 minor auctions, are scheduled to take place outside of India, with the United Kingdom among the contenders.
