Oakland Athletics Right Fielder Brent Rooker was named the American League’s Player of the Week spanning March 29-April 5. Rooker hit .438 with three home runs and seven RBI in five games last week against the Pirates and Marlins. Rooker seemingly clinched the award on March 4 against the Miami Marlins when he had five RBI in one inning in Oakland’s 20-4 rout. He is hitting .240 with eight home runs and 20 RBI in 2024.

Rooker made his MLB debut in 2020 with the Minnesota Twins. He spent two years in the “Twin Cities” before a difficult 2022 season with the San Diego Padres and Kansas City Royals that led to him being waived following the 2022 season. Rooker made the Oakland Athletics team in Spring Training in 2023 and has seemingly found his comfort zone in the league.
Rooker had a breakout 2023 season that led to him being named an All-Star for the first time in his career and also hit 30 home runs. He is a career .232 hitter with 48 home runs and 112 RBI.
Oakland Athletics Season Summary
The Athletics franchise has had a rough few years both on and off the field. They are dealing with their franchise being relocated and a dreadful record over the last three seasons. Oakland has a combined 110 wins in the 2022 and 2023 seasons and has not made the MLB Playoffs since 2020.
Oakland is not playing as well lately after losing two straight games, but they had won six straight games before their recent losing streak.
With a record of 17-19, the Oakland Athletics are only three games back of the Texas Rangers for first place in the American League West. Oakland has the fifth-lowest scoring offense in the league, but their pitching staff has been solid up until this point.
Their pitching staff is led by Starting Pitcher Paul Blackburn who is 3-1 with an ERA of 3.00. Closer Mason Miller is also top 10 in the league with eight saves. Only time will tell if Oakland will be able to continue defying expectations, but Rooker has helped the team get off to a surprisingly strong start.
