Novak Djokovic Could Face ATP Tennis Rank Drop

Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic has set up his plans for the final weeks of 2024. The 24-time Grand Slam winner has made it clear that he will give more of a priority to his family. He also will not pursue the ATP Ranking points in the final chapters of his tennis career. It means that the 37-year-old Djokovic could face an alarming slide unless he finds his best form again.

Djokovic is currently at No. 9 in the ATP Rankings. He needs to be in the top eight to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin this November. But he has stated that the tournament will not be his priority. That’s even though he has confirmed to play in the Shanghai Masters next month.

A New Goal Set Up for Novak Djokovic

After his early defeat at the US Open, Novak Djokovic seems to have another concern for his career. He had stated that the main priorities for him are playing for his country Serbia and major tournaments. Although he has not succeeded to add more Slams titles this year, he has completed his Golden Slams mission by winning the Paris Olympics gold medal.

Djokovic is also set to play some exhibition events in Saudi Arabia and Argentina over the next few weeks, He will miss the 2024 Laver Cup that will be held in Berlin starting Sept. 20. Djokovic is only confirmed to play the ATP 1000 event in Shanghai, China. The last match he had was a charity one with Bulgarian star Grigor Dimitrov in Sofia.

He admitted that a huge change had been applied to his tournament schedule. Djokavic used to have his schedule ready six months in advance. But now, he makes it more spontaneous. “Firstly, I need to physically, emotionally and mentally rest in order to even start thinking about what I want to do next, in what way, how much and where,” he said.

Ranking Drops Could Be Hard

Djokovic only has ranking points from two tournaments, dropping his current ranking in the final weeks of this year. His success in the final weeks of 2023 means he is defending 2,300 points at the Paris Masters and the ATP Finals in Turin. If he doesn’t perform well in Shanghai or Paris this year, then he could miss out on qualification for the ATP Finals and that could cause most of his 2,300 ranking points to drop from his total.

The decision he made will lead to new obstacles for Djokovic next year. Djokovic may tumble out of the top 10 of the final ATP Rankings for 2024. This may not be a major concern for a player who has won it all time and again. But it still could be an issue for him next year.

Djokovic May Have to Fight Harder

As Djokovic stated before, he wanted to focus on trying to win more Grand Slam titles and playing for his beloved Serbia. With his possible position outside the top ten, Djokovic could make the tasks tougher than before.

There would be the world number one Jannik Sinner heading into the Australian Open. He could also have Carlos Alcaraz in his draw if he stays in his current position at No 3. Djokovic would possibly play against Sinner or Alcaraz in the last 16 or the last eight at Australia.

Djokovic’s ranking can fall further if he follows his plan not to compete in too many ATP Tour events. But this magnificent champion would doubtless back himself to find a way to win even if he is making his task a little more challenging.
