Novak Djokovic Hopes For A Quick 2024 Return After Successful Knee Surgery

Novak Djokovic suffered an injury to his right knee in the fourth game of his second set fourth round clash with Francisco Cerundolo. The injury slowed him down seriously, leading to the Argentine winning the second set and securing a lead in the tie by winning the third set also.

After medications began kicking in, the three-time French Open champion made a comeback and won the match in five sets and almost five hours. During a post-match interview, Djokovic blamed the injury on the state of the court.

During the quarterfinal clash between Jannik Sinner and Grigor Dimitrov the next day, the French Open announced the 24-time Grand Slam champion had withdrawn from the tournament due to an injury and would have surgery.

Novak Djokovic Has Successful Surgery

With Wimbledon set for the beginning of July, the seven-time Wimbledon champion is set to miss the 2024 edition. Novak Djokovic would be in a race for fitness to avoid missing the Olympics which would be played on the Roland Garros arena in the second half of July.

Novak Djokovic has successfully undergone a surgery on the injured knee for the meniscus tear. He released a statement on his Instagram handle saying:

“In the past day, I had to make some tough decisions after sustaining a meniscus tear during my last match. I’m still processing it all but I am happy to update you that the surgery went well.

“I am so appreciative of the team of doctors who have been by my side, as well as the overwhelming support I have received from my fans. I’m going to do my best to be healthy and fit to return to the court as soon as possible. My love for this sport is strong and the desire to compete at the highest level is what keeps me going.”

Novak Djokovic was set to face Casper Ruud in the semifinal of the French Open after defeating Francisco Cerundolo. This victory had come less than 36 hours after Djokovic had played a five-set record-breaking clash with Lorenzo Musetti till 3.07 am.

Novak Djokovic had gone into the 2024 French Open as the second highest ranked player on the live ATP rankings, needing to win the tournament and hope Jannik Sinner didn’t get beyond the semifinals to remain world No. 1. As soon as he withdrew from the tournament, Sinner became the world No. 1 and the first ever Italian to climb that high.

Djokovic Could Miss Wimbledon

Age may be starting to catch up with the 37-year-old 8-time end-of-year world No. 1. If Novak Djokovic misses out of Wimbledon, the US Open would be his last opportunity to win a Grand Slam title in 2024. He’s at the risk of going through his first year without winning a Grand Slam title since 2017.

Novak Djokovic posted a picture on his Instagram handle which showed him in crutches with friends and his wife. He has two months to get himself back to fitness before the Olympics. The Olympics happens to be the only trophy his illustrious career hasn’t tasted yet.

2024 is the first time since 2018 that Novak Djokovic has played a season till the French Open without winning a major trophy. If he misses Wimbledon, it’d be the longest he’s gone without a major trophy in a single season since 2017.
