Over 2 Decades Later, Novak Djokovic Is Dominant

Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic collected the long-coveted Olympic gold medal earlier today in Paris. Like Thanos, the legendary Serbian has done the inevitable, becoming the only player in history to win all big events in tennis. Novak Djokovic has officially won his career Golden and Super Slam records, joining Andre Agassi as the only male player to ever do so.

After needing two tiebreaks to defeat Carlos Alcaraz to win the men’s singles gold medal, Djokovic became the oldest gold medalist in the tennis category of the Olympics since tennis returned to the Olympics in 1988 at 37 years of age. The 99-time winner couldn’t hold back the tears after the win as he hugged his children. He is considered by many as the Greatest Of All Time. How will this achievement be remembered?

Novak Djokovic’s Career Golden And Super Slams

Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic has won every big event on the ATP tour in his career. He has won the Australian Open 10 times, holding the record as the player with the most Australian Open titles. He has also won the US Open four times. He is tied with William Renshaw and Pete Sampras as the players with the second-most Wimbledon titles, with one less than Roger Federer’s eight titles.

The Serbian has won the French Open three times. His first French Open title marked his career Grand Slam record, being the title that made him complete the set of Grand Slam titles. With his second French Open title, he became one of four male legends to complete the feat twice. With his third Roland Garros title, he became the only player to complete the feat three times.

Djokovic Career Achievements

Novak Djokovic won his first ATP World Tour Finals title in 2008. In 2022, he matched Roger Federer’s 2011 record as the player with the most ATP World Tour Finals titles in history after winning his sixth title. In 2023, he set the record for the most titles in the tournament’s history with his seventh title.

With the Olympic gold medal that he just won against Carlos Alcaraz, Djokovic has completed the set needed to hold a career Golden Slam: all Grand Slam titles and an Olympic gold medal. He has also completed the set needed to hold a career Super Slam: all Grand Slam titles, an ATP World Tour Finals title, and an Olympic gold medal.

The Career Golden Masters Record

Novak Djokovic won his first ever Masters 1000 title in the Miami Open of 2007 before winning the Canadian Open title that year. He then started the 2008 year by collecting the Indian Wells Open title. By July 2016, Novak Djokovic won his fourth Canadian Open title and 30th Masters Open title overall, winning all Masters 1000 titles except the Cincinnati Open.

2017 wasn’t a good year for the legend with an injury knocking him out of most of the second half of the year. He returned in 2018 and won the Cincinnati Open for the first time in his career, officially completing the career Golden Masters and is the only player to ever do so. In 2020, the Serbian won the title again to complete the record a second time.

Is Djokovic The Greatest Of All Time?

Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic rose to world No. 1 on the ATP rankings for the first time in his career on July 4, 2011, and spent 53 weeks at the summit of the rankings until July 8, 2012, when Roger Federer displaced him. He returned to the summit of the rankings on the 5th of November of the same year and spent 48 weeks on top before losing the spot to Rafael Nadal.

Since 2011, Novak Djokovic has taken and retaken the top spot in men’s tennis 10 times, spending a total of 428 weeks as the world No. 1. This is 118 weeks more than the player the second most weeks at the top has spent, Roger Federer.

Until Novak Djokovic, Pete Sampras held the record of the male player who had finished the year at the top of the ATP rankings the most, doing it six times. This was in 1998. After a phenomenal year, Novak Djokovic finished 2011 as world No. 1. This was his first time with the title. He did it again in 2012.

Djokovic Continues Ascent Up Rankings

After losing in 2013 to Rafael Nadal, Djokovic finished 2014 and 2015 as world No. 1. He was ranked No. 1 for the entirety of 2015, becoming the sixth player to achieve this feat since Jimmy Connors first did it in 1975. This was the fourth time he would finish the year as No. 1.

Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal dislodged the Serbian in successive years, but he returned to finish 2018 as No. 1. His biggest foe, Rafael Nadal, dislodged him from the record again in 2019 but could stop him in 2020. This was the year he equaled Pete Sampras’ record. In 2021, he spent the entire year at the top of the rankings again, breaking Sampras’ record. Alcaraz broke his dominance in 2022, but he returned in 2023 to reclaim the title and extend his record.

Novak Continues His Dominance

In 2010, Novak Djokovic led Serbia to their first Davis Cup title, playing a fundamental role by defeating Gilles Simon and Gaël Monfils of France in the singles matches of the final. He had earlier defeated John Isner and Sam Querrey of the USA in the first round to send Serbia to a clash with Croatia in the second round.

Djokovic is widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. He’s the greatest tennis player on hard court, a close contender to Roger Federer and Pete Sampras on grass-court and a worthy competitor to Rafael Nadal’s crown, although far behind the Spaniard and Björn Borg, on clay. The Serbian holds the most Grand Slam titles with 24. He is the only player in history to win a non-calendar-year Grand Slam. He won all consecutive Grand Slam titles from the US Open of 2015 to the French Open of 2016.
