Impact of Noah Lyles Ending USA’s 100m Drought

Noah Lyles

Noah Lyles won the gold medal for the USA in the men’s 100-meter final Sunday night. In one of the closest races you will ever see, Lyles just edged out Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson by .005 seconds to win it. Lyles ran a personal best 9.79-second race. For the USA, it was their first Olympic gold medal in the men’s 100 meters in 20 years when Justin Gatlin won gold in the 2004 Athens Olympics.

For an event that Jamaica has dominated for the last couple of decades, the United States now finally has the crown. Not only did the USA win the gold medal, but it also secured the bronze medal. American Fred Kerley ran a 7.81 and held on to 3rd place to get him onto the podium. How did the race unfold?

USA’s First 100m Men’s Gold Since ‘04

The United States has not had an Olympic gold medal in the Men’s 100 meters since Justin Gatlin in 2004. Noah Lyles snapped the 20-year drought Sunday night with his impressive showing in the final, running a 9.79. The United States is back on top in this event.

Usain Bolt won gold in the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Olympics. After Bolt retired, it appeared that the USA would be able to snatch it back in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. That was not the case as Italian sprinter Lamont Jacobs stunned the world, winning gold. The silver medal in that race went to USA’s Fred Kerley. Kerley got on the podium tonight with a bronze medal after running a 7.81.

Noah Lyles Brings Home Olympic Gold

Noah Lyles won his first Olympic gold medal by the slimmest of margins. Lyles got out to a slow start out of the blocks but then kicked it into full gear. It was difficult to tell who won until the slowed down replay showed Lyles leaning across the finish line a split second before the rest of the field. It was one of the most exciting photo finish races ever.

Lyles is solidifying himself as the fastest man in the world. There will be no debate on who the fastest in the world is if he gets gold in the 200 meters to go along with this gold in the 100. He has proclaimed that he is better at the 200 so it would be a shocker if he doesn’t come out on top. Lyles currently has the third-fastest 200-meter time ever of 19.31 when he won the 2022 World Championships at Hayward Field.

The throne for fastest man has been up for grabs ever since Usain Bolt retired in 2017 after dominating the sport for a decade. If Lyles can win the gold in the 200 meters later this week, he will rightfully claim the throne. Not only would be the 100 and 200-meter Olympic champion, it comes off him winning each event at the World Championships in 2023 in Budapest, and the 200 in 2022. There’s a new king of the track and his name is Noah Lyles.

USA Leading Medal Count

With the help from Noah Lyles, the United States now has tied China for the most gold medals at these Olympics at 19 each. The USA has a huge lead over the rest of the world in total medals, with 71. The next closest countries are China and France with 45 and 44 respectively.

There are still dozens of competitions left in the 2024 Paris Olympics. With the race heating up for most gold medals, it is going to be a thrilling finish to the games. We will see if Noah Lyles can get another gold and if the United States will be able to hold off the rest of the competition.
