The NHL still has some unrestricted free agents who have not signed with teams as of yet for the new NHL season starting in October. Free agents include Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremey Swayman, defenseman Tyson Barrie, Blake Wheeler, Tyler Johnson, and Nick Cousins. These top five free agents hope to land on a team soon and sign a contract before the NHL season starts.
NHL Top 5 Free Agents

- Jeremy Swayman, (BOS), Jeremey Swayman has had remarkable seasons with the Boston Bruins from regular season to playoffs. Last season, Swayman opted for arbitration, which led the netminder to sign a one-year deal of $3.4 million. This year Swayman and the Bruins have not agreed this summer on a contract. The Bruins and Swayman are hoping to come to an agreement and the goaltender can get back to the ice for the Bruins.
- Tyson Barrie, (NSH), despite putting up 55 points in 85 games including playoffs Barrie still finds himself a free agent. He played 43 games for the Nashville Predators this season and played in the playoff game where he notched an assist. Barrie is turning 33 before the season starts but this can bring a veteran leadership role to a team with a struggling powerplay.
- Blake Wheeler, (NYR), Blake Wheeler is surprisingly a free agent after being with the New York Rangers. A source close to the situation at hand has said that the Boston Bruins are interested in the forward. Wheeler did think about retiring after the season but he has not officially retired yet. Wheeler, 37 years old suffered a gruesome leg injury in February and only played 54 games last season. If the Bruins do give him a chance it could bring a veteran presence to the bottom six forwards of the Bruins.
- Tyler Johnson, (CHI), Tyler Johnson decided to explore the free agency market at the end of the 2023-24 NHL season. Johnson has spent the past three seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks, he scored 17 goals and 31 points in 67 games last season. He is a Memorial Cup, Calder Cup, and a two-time Stanley Cup champion. His high energy and experience can help up and down the lines The chance of him signing is either at maybe Winnipeg or Los Angeles but signing back with Chicago is always a possibility.
- Nick Cousins, (FLA), Cousins has played for the Florida Panthers for the past two seasons and made it to the Stanley Cup Finals twice losing one and winning one. Despite getting injured with concussions and injuries he has only played 69 games this past season with seven goals, 15 points, 64 penalty minutes, and 130 hits. Even though his offense isn’t his strong suit, he brings excellent agitating ability and a physical style of play. The Colorado Avalanche can be a landing spot for Cousins for this upcoming season it would be a cheap one-year deal.
Final Thoughts
These NHL-free agents are on the verge of finding new teams to play this upcoming NHL season. Hopefully, the Boston Bruins can hang on to Jeremy Swayman because that can be a great loss for the Bruins if Swayman ends up on another team. Even though these free agents bring a veteran presence to a team they are also older and their speed and agility start to decline. It is understandable for no signing so far this summer but the NHL season does not start for another month or so. Barrie, Johnson, Swayman, Cousins, and Wheeler all have time to find a new team for the new season.
