Remembering Game 6 of the 2015 NHL Stanley Cup Finals

In 2015, the NHL had a very interesting Stanley Cup Finals Matchup among them, the Chicago Blackhawks were aiming to win their 3rd Stanley Cup win in five years winning in 2010 and 2013.

The Tampa Bay Lightning at this point was their 2nd ever Stanley Cup Final appearance with them winning the Stanley Cup in 2004, the Lightning had home-ice advantage in the series.

Series Recap Leading Up to Game 6

Chicago Blackhawks NHL

Tampa Bay opened the series up at home and used the crowd to take a very early lead from an Alex Killorn goal, but Teuvo Teravainen who signed back with Chicago this offseason in 2024 and Antoine Vermette scored 118 seconds apart to win the game 2–1 for the Blackhawks.

Tampa Bay responded in Game 2 with a win, but star goalie Ben Bishop exited the game with a torn groin, Andrei Vasilevskiy who was credited with his first playoff victory at a 3-2 win replaced Bishop, Andrei Vasilevskiy then was a backup would make his name for being an elite playoff goalie for many years to come.

Ben Bishop would be back in the net for Game 3, which would lead Tampa Bay to a win in Chicago in a second consecutive one-goal win, which was 3-2 Tampa Bay. Andrei Vasilevskiy would get the start in Game 4 to rest Bishop who was probably not 100%, but despite a low-scoring game Chicago would tie the series at 2-2, with a 2-1 win, the 4th game in a row that was decided by one goal, It was the first time since 1968.

Game 5 was back in Tampa Bay, where Ben Bishop was back in the net but a very huge mistake where Bishop and Star Defenceman Victor Hedman ran into each other leading to Patrick Sharp scoring into an empty net, Antoine Vermette scored in the third period to help Chicago win the game 2-1, another 1 goal game in the series and now Chicago was trying to win the Stanley Cup on home ice.

Game 6 Recap

There were no lineup changes for either team entering this game, The 1st Period was scoreless Lightning Superstar Nikita Kucherov was stripped on a breakaway from Blackhawks Defenceman Johnny Oduya, also Steven Stamkos the Lightning Captain hit the post on a great chance to once again give Tampa the first goal in the game. The Blackhawks had two powerplays in the period where Ben Bishop held tall, he stoned Jonathan Toews’s chance right in front of the net on the 2nd Powerplay chance.

In the second period Stamkos was once again stopped but this time was stopped on a breakaway from Blackhawks Goalie Corey Crawford, Duncan Keith would open the scoring 17:13 into the 2nd period to take the lead in game 6 for Chicago.

The third period began and Tampa had 20 minutes to save their season, but Chicago just shut them down, and Patrick Kane would score the second and final goal in the game 14:46 into the 3rd period, Tampa Bay just had no answers for Crawford, and the Blackhawks Defense who shut them out 2-0, winning their third Stanley Cup in five years.

Tampa Bay would end up winning two Stanley Cups of their own after this in 2020 and 2021, before losing in the Finals to the Colorado Avalanche shutting down their chances at a three-peat.
