NFL Suspends Von Miller 4 Games, but the Reason is Unclear

Von Miller, an edge rusher for the Buffalo Bills, has been suspended four games for violating the National Football League’s personal conduct policy. The All-Pro edge rusher was arrested last November for domestic violence. Miller denied all allegations while stating that the information was “one hundred percent false.”

The NFL’s active leader in career sacks is now eligible for reinstatement following the week 8 matchup on October 28th, when Buffalo travel west to take on the Seattle Seahawks.

The Reason Von Miller was Suspended is Cloudy

Speculation has been surrounding the reason why Von Miller was suspended, with the main assumption being his November arrest for domestic violence. While we have attempted to gather more information for the reason why edge rusher Von Miller was suspended, head coach Sean McDermott stated, “We respect the decision made by the league. It’s out of our control, and what we need to focus on is that it’s an opportunity for someone on our football team to step up.”

Later in the press conference, McDermott was asked if Von Miller’s suspension was related to his November 2023 arrest for domestic violence. He responded, “I’m not in a position to go into the details on it, so you can assume what you can assume, but that’s where we’re at on it.” The Bills will rely on a defensive end room that features Greg Rousseau, A.J. Epenesa, 2024 5th round pick Javon Solomon, and Casey Toohill. Expectations are that the team will call up either Kameron Cline or Syracuse alum Kingsley Jonathan for game days to add extra depth.

NFL Steps In

If Miller was suspended due to the November 2023 incident, then the NFL must have found probable cause to justify the suspension. He was arrested for the incident but was never charged with anything. According to Miller, “The case has been dismissed.” The NFL typically waits for the investigation to conclude and trial to be completed before making a decision on cases like these, but sometimes the NFL and teams jump to conclusions before the judicial process plays out.

In August 2022, the Buffalo Bills cut punter Matt Araiza after allegations stemming from a party he attended. While the Bills were quick to judge and make a decision on cutting Araiza, they could have let the NFL step in and place him on the commissioner’s exempt list. Matt was later found innocent of all charges and has proved that he wasn’t at the party when the allegations arose. His career was in jeopardy before it ever began. In 2024, the Kansas City Chiefs signed the controversial punter. Do you think the NFL should let the judicial process play out before a player can be cut from the team?

Final thoughts

Von Miller’s suspension is a devastating blow to a Buffalo Bills defense that is decimated with injuries. Four of Buffalo’s defensive starters are currently out for the team. LB’s Matt Milano and Terrel Bernard, as well as CB Taron Johnson and S Taylor Rapp, are battling various injuries, and their statuses for return are unknown. Losing the NFL’s active leader in sacks, Von Miller is just another blow for a Bills defense that has to face the Houston Texans, New York Jets, Tennessee Titans, and Seattle Seahawks in his absence.
