The NFL rumor mill is already churning. Even though the 2024 NFL season is only two weeks old, teams are already looking to upgrade their rosters. Some teams thought they had enough talent but it isn’t working out on the field. Others have been ravaged by injuries, leaving them with a gaping hole on the roster. While the NFL trade deadline has historically not been very exciting, that doesn’t stop the NFL rumor mill. According to one NFL insider, four teams are looking to add a talented wide receiver.
NFL Rumor Mill: Wide Receivers
ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported that four teams, the Dallas Cowboys, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Los Angeles Rams, and the Washington Commanders, are all in the market for a wide receiver. The Rams are the obvious candidate. Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp are out with long-term injuries. While they may return at some point this season, there isn’t a set return date. Kansas City is in a similar boat. Marques “Hollywood” Brown is out for the season, and he was supposed to be a vital part of the offense. Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy have shown flashes, but Brown’s veteran presence would have helped.
The Cowboys make sense, as Jerry Jones is always looking to chase the ever-elusive Super Bowl. For Dallas, the biggest issue would be making the contracts work after signing CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott to mega deals with Micah Parsons lurking next offseason. Washington is the most surprising team, but they are looking to surround number two overall and pick Jayden Daniels with as much talent as possible. Could we actually see players move at the deadline?
More Deadline Deals In 2024?
We’ve seen a slow increase in trade deadline deals in the NFL. It used to be the NFL rumor mill that would spin, but teams would end up staying put. Christian McCaffrey was famously traded at the midseason mark, and in 2023, we saw a record amount of big-name players on the move. Washington sent Chase Young to San Francisco and Montez Sweat to Chicago. The Seahawks got Leonard Williams to beef up their pass rush, and the Eagles nabbed safety Kevin Byard. Buffalo was able to convince the Packers to part with cornerback Rasul Douglas, and the Vikings got Josh Dobbs after Kirk Cousins tore his Achilles.
This all may just be an NFL rumor put out by these teams to get things moving. Franchises use the media all the time to try and create leverage. The next few weeks will determine what happens at the deadline. If teams start to lose games and the playoffs seem impossible, they may start to consider moving their best players to a desperate team.
