NFL Ramps Up Gambling Policy Training Ahead Of 2024 Season

Super Bowl NFL gambling policy

The NFL season is just around the corner. The preseason has wrapped for some teams, and fans can start looking toward week 1. One of the major issues in sports today is the presence of betting. The sports betting industry has exploded over the past few years as states have begun to legalize the practice. This presents new challenges for the league’s players as there are strict policies for gambling. The league has ramped up education on their policies ahead of the season.

NFL Gambling Policies Education

Ten players were suspended for gambling violations last offseason, but none have been suspended this offseason, and the NFL wants to keep it that way. Rob Maaddi of the Associated Press reported that the league is ramping up efforts to educate players on what they can and cannot do in the sports betting world. The league’s chief compliance officer, Sabrina Perel, talked about how in-person training yielded results.

“We learned from last year when in-person education was optional, the benefits of presenting in-person, including increased engagement and awareness, the opportunity for players to ask questions. So for all 32 teams this year, the education was conducted at the team facility during minicamps or training camp.”

The rules are often confusing to players. Some players who committed violations did not realize what they were doing was prohibited by the league. The fact there have been no suspensions this offseason shows how serious the NFL has been about the education of these policies.

What Can’t The Players Do?

In the article, Maaddi shared the six points the NFL makes sure players understand. The rules go far beyond betting on NFL games.

  • “Never bet on the NFL: This includes other NFL events such as draft, combine, Pro Bowl and NFL Honors.
  • “Don’t have someone bet for you: Do not ask family, friends or others to place a bet for you.
  • “Don’t gamble (no bets on sports, casino or card games) at your team facility or stadium, while traveling for a road game or staying at a team hotel.
  • “Don’t share team ‘inside information’: Don’t share information that hasn’t been announced by the team.
  • “Don’t enter a sportsbook during the NFL playing season.
  • “Don’t play daily fantasy football.”

Many players have stumbled when it comes to not betting at team facilities. Players have bet on other sports while in the locker room or at the team hotel, not realizing it is against the league’s policies. The league hopes this consistent in-person training will completely eliminate any issues and uphold the integrity of the game.
