Jacob Oram will be joining the New Zealand Cricket setup as the new bowling coach of the New Zealand men’s cricket team. He has been just appointed to the post and will join on October 7, 2024. Oram’s appointment fills the vacancy created by Shane Jurgensen, who resigned in November 2023. Oram’s return to the Black Caps follows a sequence of acting stints with the team, which saw them draw a Test series in Bangladesh, battle hard in a T20I series against Australia, and then exit at the early stages of the Men’s T20 World Cup.
A Coaching Career Replete with Stories
Oram’s coaching career began in 2014 when he was appointed as the coach of New Zealand A, and then he went on to coach the New Zealand Women’s team till the 2022 Women’s ODI World Cup. His diverse experience also includes franchise roles as head coach of Central Hinds in the Super Smash and an assistant coach for the Northern Warriors in the T10 league.
The 46-year-old is excited about the chance to be involved once more with the Black Caps. “I am very excited about being given the opportunity to come back and be part of a team that has been such a big part of my life,” Oram said. A lot of recent coaching opportunities have kept me close to the group; it has kept me across the direction of the team, and I am looking forward to continuing to contribute and help continue this growth.
Oram’s Vision for the Bowling Attack
Oram is quite eager to get associated with the fast-emerging talent of New Zealand’s bowling ranks. “I hope to be able to share my knowledge and experience to help prepare them for the challenges of international cricket,” he stated His goal is to merge this vast experience with the new energy that is coming into the team.
New Zealand’s head coach, Gary Stead, welcomed Oram back to the fold. “Jake’s a great operator,” Stead said. His career as a player and his coaching experiences speak for themselves, Stead explained the areas where Oram will be of more significance, especially on the deep understanding he has in both international and franchise cricket, which is crucial in today’s game.
Oram’s Playing Legacy
For the uninitiated, Jacob Oram had an illustrious playing career, playing 33 Tests, 160 ODIs, and 36 T20Is for New Zealand. He was an indispensable all-rounder for the Black Caps, and his coming back into the fold in a coaching capacity is highly looked forward to.
Oram brings fresh blood and energy into the coaching staff as he’s been named amid preparation for the Black Caps’ tour to India. The upcoming series is an early opportunity for Oram to put his stamp on things and have an influence that can be reflected in the team’s performance.
