Juan Soto had a ball, especially this Tuesday night at Guaranteed Rate Field. It was the game of his life since he hit three homers, giving the New York Yankees a huge lead over the hopeless Chicago White Sox. Soto went deep three times in a game for the first time in his career. All of those blasts were displays of terrific power and accuracy. This was one special gift for his fellow Yankees that gave them a four-run cushion, making the job that much easier.
Cortes, Soto, and Cousins Star in Yanks’ Win
While most of the spotlight was on Soto’s hitting, other Yankees put in similar performances to close out the win. Nestor Cortes was sterling on the mound, throwing seven scoreless innings and striking out nine. It was his best outing in over a month, proving he may be regaining his top form.
In a very heated ninth, Jake Cousins was the salve that was needed. He picked up the final outs for his first big-league save, and the Yankees won as he stranded the bases loaded. And it wasn’t all home runs with Soto. After registering a groundout in his first at-bat, he quickly adjusted. He stepped into the batter’s circle and ripped about 20 practice swings near the dugout. It was one of those routines that caught the attention of Yankees captain Aaron Judge.
Soto’s Adjustment Pays Off with Three Homers
The Judge, as impressed as anyone, played up the quick fix. The Judge called out to Soto, who replied by hitting a third home run to show that his approach was effective. But his homer didn’t come without a little bit of work. He said he had fought off a tough pitch earlier in the game, then went back to work. “Jonathan Cannon threw me a pitch I should have hammered, and I just rolled it over. So, I went back to my routine and started thinking about how to adjust,” Soto said.
It paid timely dividends, since Soto hit a two-run shot in the third, another in the fifth, and a solo homer in the seventh. With this impressive display, he has 33 homers this season, just two shy of his single-season career high. His recent form has been quite encouraging, with five homers in the last three games.
Soto’s Three Homers Provide Big Boost
The crowd rose in anticipation of a third long ball from Soto. Despite the home team’s struggles, fans left with Soto’s performance as a highlight. The Yankees finally provided the jolt of offense they needed to produce, especially after a lukewarm ball game the night before. Then, the Yankees struggled with runners in scoring position and suffered a bad loss to the White Sox. Soto’s three homers came when the team needed a boost the most.
Soto, with his chase for his 300th career homer and his recent hot streak towards the end of the season, will add great impetus in the playoff push the Yankees need. Fans will watch in particular to see whether he can keep up this type of performance and continue to lead the team to victory. His season will go a long way towards shaping whether the Yankees are to sustain any playoff success or not.
