New York Yankees Offensive Roller Coaster Dips in Loss

The New York Yankees’ bats came alive on Monday in a 10-4 win over the Kansas City Royals. Just as quickly as the Yankee bats came alive, they were silenced. Tuesday night the Yankees failed to score and were shut out 5-0 by those very same Royals. The dynamic duo of Juan Soto and Aaron Judge were a combined 3-6 with two runs, an RBI, and four walks in the win. In the loss, Soto and Judge combined for 0-8 with four strikeouts. As Soto and Judge go, so go the New York Yankees.

In the American League East battle with the Baltimore Orioles, the Yankees managed to gain a 1.5-game cushion with the win Monday and an Orioles loss to the Boston Red Sox. So frustratingly to Yanks’ fans, they gave it right back with the loss Tuesday and the Orioles bounced back against the Sox. It appears the trend may continue to the final series between the two September 24-24.

With 17 games left in the season, Fangraphs gives the Yankees a 60.7% chance of winning the division. The Orioles’ odds are 38.7%. The unaccounted-for 0.6% chance to win the division can be accounted for by rounding errors between the two teams. No other team in the division is realistically in the mix, though perhaps not mathematically eliminated. Sorry Red Sox fans.

Luis Gil Takes the Mound in Rubber Match

Luis Gil will pitch game three of the series tonight. The 26-year-old right-hander has won three of his last five starts but has made it to the sixth inning just once. That was in his last outing against the Chicago Cubs where he didn’t allow a run while striking out seven and walking just two. That Gil was a refreshing sight after getting bounced in three innings against the Cleveland Indians and being the four-inning pitcher of record in the unfathomable 2-12 loss to the historically bad Chicago White Sox. The Yankees need good Gil, and some hitting to take the series and keep pace ahead of the Orioles.

What to Watch on the Scoreboard

While the Yankees take to their task at hand with the Royals, scoreboard watchers should pay attention to the goings on at Fenway Park. The Orioles will wrap up their series against the Red Sox, also seeking to take the rubber match there. The Orioles are 5-5 in their last 10, while the Red Sox are 3-7. Two nights ago, the two teams scored the most runs on the slate, while last night the two teams scored a healthy 8 runs. Look for fireworks with Yankees fans having the unenviable task of rooting for Boston.
