New York Yankees Lose Another Series

The New York Yankees have hit a rough patch.

The New York Yankees were drubbed by the St. Louis Cardinals 14-7 on Sunday to drop a second consecutive series. After dropping two of three in Washington DC to the now 61-76 Washington Nationals, the New York Yankees came home over the weekend to drop two of three to the barely .500 Cardinals.

The pitching staff gave up 29 runs in the four losses across the two series. Yesterday, usually reliable starter, Nestor Cortes, gave up five earned runs in just four innings. Reliever Tommy Kahnle pretty much sealed the deal by surrendering three earned runs in just 0.1 innings. Will New York be able to rebound over the final few weeks of the regular season?

While the Yankees odds of making the playoffs remain 99.8% according to Fangraphs, the same projection system has dropped their odds of winning the American League East to 59.1%. The Yankees’ inability to beat sub- .500 teams like the Nationals and barely .500 teams like the Cardinals are largely to blame.

In theory, the schedule for the New York Yankees is pretty favorable going forward, with three games in Arlington against the Texas Rangers (65-72) and three games at Wrigley against the Chicago Cubs (71-66) who are nine games out of first place in the National League Central. Given not only recent performance but performance throughout the season against weaker opponents, nothing is a sure thing.

How the First Week of September Lays Out

In the series against the Rangers, the Yankees will trot out Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon in the first two games. They are arguably the best starting pitchers the New York Yankees have, despite some shaky starts here and there. The Yankees must take care of business in Texas because the Orioles have drawn the lottery card to start the week, playing three against the historically bad Chicago White Sox.

The Rangers’ pitching staff ranks ninth-worst in all of Major League Baseball with a 4.29 ERA. The bullpen by itself, minus the starters, is seventh worst with a 4.32 ERA. The Rangers do not score runs either, ranking seventh-worst in all of baseball. Their one redeeming quality is that they do make contact. Rangers’ hitters strike out in the lower third of the league, ranked 21st in strikeout rate.

The Yankees Need To Get It Done

Starting tonight, the New York Yankees need to pull together all aspects of their game: pitching, hitting, fielding. The assumption should be the Orioles are going to win the next three games against the White Sox. The New York Yankees cannot afford to surrender first place in the last month of the season.
