The New York Yankees Fall Again as AL East Remains Tight

Juan Soto New York Yankees

The New York Yankees lost to the Texas Rangers for the second straight night as the Baltimore Orioles also stumble. The Yankees came up short again against the Rangers by a score of 10-6. Fortunately for the Bombers, the Baltimore Orioles failed to take advantage, losing to the historically bad Chicago White Sox 8-1 in Camden Yards. Tuesday night, the Yankees’ 7-4 loss to the Rangers had opened the door wide enough for the Orioles to slip a half-game into first place in the American League East. The two contending teams are currently tied in the loss column with Baltimore winning the one extra game they have played.

Yankees Pitching Has Been Shaky

Except for Carlos Rendon on Tuesday, who threw 6.0 innings of one hit, one run baseball while striking out 11, the Yankees’ pitching staff has been less than stellar. Clay Holmes’ blown save on Tuesday where he allowed four earned runs in 0.1 innings ignited a controversy on X (formerly Twitter) and resulted in manager Aaron Boone conceding that the team may need to rethink how they approached the role of closer going forward. Last night, there was little need to fret about the bullpen as starter Marcus Stroman gave up five earned runs in the first 3.2 innings of the game before giving way to four other pitchers, two of whom would give up another five runs.

The Baltimore Orioles Fail to Take Advantage

On a night of continued bad fortune for the Yankees, there was one silver lining. The Orioles were unable to capitalize. The O’s were drubbed by the 32-109 White Sox by a score of 8-1. Ironically, the eight runs scored by the White Sox was the most they had scored since August 12th when they beat the New York Yankees 12-2 in the Bronx. It may turn out that the only highlight for the 2024 Chicago White Sox will be playing a crucial role in determining the outcome of the AL East and the first Wild Card.

Both the Orioles and the Yankees have Thursday off with the Birds playing three against the Tampa Rays at Camden and the Yanks travel to the Windy City to take on the Chicago Cubs in Wrigley over the weekend. The Rays have dropped eight of ten to the Orioles this season while the Cubs have won seven of their last nine games.

Yankees Season Comes Down to Three Weeks

The Yankees record stands at 80-60. The Orioles are 81-61. The entire season comes down to the last three weeks. One team will be crowned AL East Champions. The other will have to settle for the Wildcard. Buckle up Yankees fans. The ride may be wild.
