New York Mets With Thrilling Win; Advance To NLDS

The New York Mets had a spectacular win tonight to advance to the NLDS.

New York Mets First Baseman has been struggling at the plate lately but had the biggest hit of his career tonight. He hit a go-ahead three-run homer to send New York to the NLDS as the Mets won 4-2 tonight. Offense was hard to come by this evening in Milwaukee. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning. Brewers First Baseman Jake Bauers pinch hit and blasted a solo home run to get the scoring started. The next batter, Right Fielder Sal Frelick, blasted another home run to give the Milwaukee Brewers a 2-0 lead through seven innings of play.

New York finally got their offense going in the top of the ninth inning when they scored four runs. In addition to Alonso’s three-run blast, Right Fielder Starling Marte gave the New York Mets a 4-2 lead entering the bottom of the ninth. Starting Pitcher David Peterson shut the door and helped New York punch their ticket to the NLDS where they will face the Philadelphia Phillies.

Pitching Ruled the Night; Until It Didn’t

Both pitching staffs had stellar performances this evening in Milwaukee. Mets Starting Pitcher Jose Quintana had a great night. He tossed six scoreless innings and punched out five. He unfortunately walked away with a no-decision as his offense was no help while he was in the game. Relief Pitcher Jose Butto had a rough outing, but Alonso bailed him out. Butto surrendered two earned runs and recorded only one out.

New York’s offense was stifled all night until they were needed most. They were only able to muster two hits before their ninth inning explosion. Brewers Starting Pitcher Tobias Myers tossed five scoreless innings. The rest of the Brewers bullpen tossed two scoreless innings until Devin Williams surrendered four earned runs in his nightmarish appearance.

The New York Mets Are Moving On

New York will face the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park in a best-of-five series beginning Saturday. The Mets were 6-7 against the Phillies this season, and there is no love lost between these franchises. Philadelphia will send Zack Wheeler to the mound in Game 1. In a stroke of poetic justice, Wheeler will get to face his former team as he was a member of the New York Mets from 2013-2019. Wheeler had a dominant 2024 regular season campaign as he was third in wins, third in ERA, third in strikeouts, and third in WHIP.

He experienced great success against the New York Mets this season. Wheeler faced New York in his penultimate start of the regular season and was dominant. He surrendered two earned runs over seven innings while punching out eight. He will look to reproduce this start on Saturday and put his former ballclub in a 0-1 hole.

An improbable win like tonight is the antithesis of what the New York Mets usually do. Their late season/playoff shortcomings are numerous, but this evening they were able to flip the script. After such a strong final few months of the regular season the baseball world may be left wondering, are the 2024 New York Mets truly a team of destiny?
