New York Mets Win Extra-Inning Thriller 6-4 On Walk-Off Home Run

The New York Mets begin an important series tonight.

A walk-off two-run home run from New York Mets Third Baseman Mark Vientos sent the Citi Field crowd into a frenzy as the team won their eighth game in a row. It was his second home run of the evening and his second walk-off home run of the year. He also did so on April 28. The NY Mets continue to be the hottest team in Major League Baseball and make it seem like magic is in the air for the 2024 New York Mets.

Vientos was complimentary of the home crowd after the game tonight: “It’s this energy. It’s this energy from Citi Field right now. We’re loving it right now. That’s why we’re coming out here and working our a–es off.”

How much longer will this winning streak last?

Vientos got the scoring started early tonight at Citi Field as he hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. He finished 3-of-5 with 4 RBI. Cincinnati Shortstop Elly De La Cruz responded with a two-run homer of his own in the top of the fourth. The New York Mets offense awoke in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to RBI singles by Infielder Jose Iglesias and Designated Hitter J.D. Martinez. Cincinnati responded yet again to knot the game up at 4 thanks to a two-run home run by Center Fielder TJ Friedl. All of this set the stage for some theatrics from Vientos.

New York Mets Pitching Comes Up Clutch

New York Starting Pitcher Sean Manaea had a stellar start this evening but walked away with a no decision. He surrendered three hits tonight, two of which went over the fence. Manaea ultimately surrendered four earned runs over 6.2 innings of work while striking out nine. Reds opener Fernando Cruz gave up two earned runs in his one inning on the mound.

Both bullpens pitched well, but it was the bullpen of the New York Mets that was a bit better. NY Relief Pitcher Jose Butto tossed a scoreless top of the 10th and stranded the “ghost runner.” This allowed Vientos to win the game by getting the better of Reds Relief Pitcher Justin Wilson in an epic eight pitch at-bat.

Looking Ahead To Tomorrow’s Game

The middle game of this three-game set will see the New York Mets send Jose Quintana(7-9, 4.27 ERA) to the mound. He is coming off a solid start last Saturday against the Chicago White Sox. Quintana surrendered one earned run over five innings of work and punched out six. The starter for the Reds has yet to be announced.

With the Atlanta Braves defeating the Toronto Blue Jays tonight, there has been no change in the National League Wild Card picture. The New York Mets and Atlanta are still tied for the third and final National League Wild Card spot. New York will look to win their ninth game in a row tomorrow afternoon.
