New York Mets Bested In Pitcher’s Duel 3-1 By Cincinnati Reds

The New York Mets Mets Are a Disaster Losing 7 of 10

The Cincinnati Reds defeated the New York Mets 3-1 this afternoon snapping NY’s nine-game winning streak. The Mets were gunning for their first winning streak of 10+ games since 2008. Ironically, it was the Cincinnati Reds that snapped the Mets’ 10-game winning streak back in 2008. Both offenses were held down until New York Mets Right Fielder Starling Marte had an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning. Cincinnati responded with an RBI single by Third Baseman Noelvi Marte to tie the game at one.

Cincinnati then took advantage of a New York Mets bullpen that has been much better as of late. Mets Reliever Phil Maton surrendered two runs in the top of the ninth inning which proved to be the difference during this Sunday matinee. Designated Hitter Santiago Espinal’s two-run double helped the Reds avoid a series sweep at the hands of the red-hot New York Mets. Will New York be able to get back on track next week?

New York Mets Starting Pitcher Luis Severino stifled Cincinnati’s offense this afternoon. He surrendered one earned run over 6.2 innings and punched out eight. He walked away with a no-decision as the New York Mets offense did not give him any run support in this matchup. Cincinnati Reds Starting Pitcher Julian Aguiar also did not factor into the decision this afternoon. He tossed 4.2 scoreless innings. Relief Pitcher Tony Santillan relieved Aguilar and surrendered the game’s first run.

Cincinnati’s bullpen surrendered one earned run over 4.1 innings while NY’s relievers surrendered two earned runs over 2.1 innings. Both teams combined to muster 11 hits in a game that was dominated for long stretches by the pitchers. The Mets and Reds combined to go 4-of-17 with RISP this afternoon. Cincinnati had timely hits on their way to the victory. The brother of New York Mets Closer Edwin Diaz, Alexis Diaz, recorded his 26th save of the year to secure the victory.

Looking Ahead To Tomorrow’s Game

The New York Mets begin a three-game series on the road against the Toronto Blue Jays tomorrow. New York will send Paul Blackburn(5-4, 4.66 ERA) to the mound against former Met Chris Bassitt(9-13, 4.30 ERA). Blackburn is coming off a miserable start and will make his return from the IL in time for tomorrow’s start. He surrendered five earned over 2.1 innings of work against the San Diego Padres and left with a hand injury and an IL stint.

Bassitt is coming off a mediocre start against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. He surrendered three earned runs over 5.1 innings. The New York Mets will look to get back in the win column in another country tomorrow night.
