New York Mets Get Much-Needed Victory

The New York Mets had a great offensive game on Tuesday.

A go-ahead single in the top of the ninth inning by New York Mets Third Baseman José Iglesias helped the team win 3-2 and get a series win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. NY took two of three against the top NL Wild Card team. The series finale earlier today was a back-and-forth contest. A solo home run by New York Mets First Baseman Pete Alonso got the scoring started in the top of the second inning. Arizona responded with two runs in the bottom of the third. Mets Shortstop Francisco Lindor then blasted a solo shot in the sixth inning to tie the game at 2. This set the stage for some late-game fireworks.

This National League battle remained tied until the ninth inning. A one-out double by Jesse Winker and a flyout by J.D. Martinez put the game on the bat of Iglesias. He was up to the task, as has been the case multiple times this season, and came through with a go-ahead single. New York Mets Closer Edwin Diaz, after blowing the save in last night’s game, was much better today. He struck out two in a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth. Will the Mets be able to ride this momentum into their next series?

This game was the lowest-scoring one of the three-game set, and a major reason why was great outings by both starting pitchers. New York Mets Starting Pitcher David Peterson surrendered two earned runs over seven innings of work while punching out four. He lowered his ERA to 2.83 on the season. Diamondbacks Starting Pitcher Ryne Nelson was dazzling as well this afternoon as he surrendered two earned runs over 6.1 innings of work. Unfortunately, both of these starting pitchers were handed a no-decision as their offense struggled to provide them with much run support.

Even though the New York Mets and Diamondbacks combined for 17 hits today, both clubs struggled with RISP. New York went 1-of-8 while Arizona went 0-of-1. New York’s only hit with runners in scoring position was the Iglesias single. Not a bad time to come up clutch.

New York Mets Upcoming Schedule

New York heads to “The Windy City” for a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox beginning tomorrow. Chicago has been historically awful this season. This could be exactly what the New York Mets need to get back into the National League playoff picture. New York is now 3.5 games back of the third and final wild card spot. The Mets need to carry the momentum from a strong series in Arizona into what they hope to be a successful series against an awful team.
