New York Mets Star On Fire In Last 5 Games

The New York Mets had a rough nigh on Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays.

New York Mets Second Baseman Jeff McNeil entered the all-star break scuffling but has been a completely different player post all-star break. McNeil has four home runs in five games since the all-star break. He hit a two-run home run tonight as the New York Mets defeated the New York Yankees 3-2. McNeil entered the “Subway Series” swinging one of the hottest bats in the league as he had three home runs in a four-game series on the road against the Miami Marlins.

It has been a disappointing season for McNeil as he is hitting .225 with nine home runs and 32 RBI. Will McNeil be able to stay hot as the New York Mets fight for playoff position in a crowded National League?

Jeff McNeil Career Summary

McNeil made his debut in 2018 and has spent all seven seasons of his career in Flushing as a member of the New York Mets. He is a two-time MLB All-Star(2019, 2022) and won a Silver Slugger Award in 2022. McNeil also won the batting title in 2022 with a batting average of .326.

Mets fans everywhere were hoping 2024 would be a better season for the former batting champion as 2023 was one of the worst seasons of McNeil’s career. Up until this point, including this recent hot streak, 2024 has clearly been the worst season of McNeil’s career. McNeil is a career .290 hitter with 65 home runs and 301 RBI.

New York Mets Season Summary

New York(52-48) has utilized a solid stretch of baseball to rocket up the standings. They are in third place in the National League East but hold a half-game lead for the third and final National League Wild Card spot. They have been powered by a strong offense this season. New York is 11th in batting average, eighth in runs scored, and fourth in home runs. Their offense is paced by Left Fielder Brandon Nimmo and Shortstop Francisco Lindor. Nimmo is top 20 in the league in RBI while Lindor is top 20 in the league in round-trippers.

The pitching staff of the New York Mets has been a sore spot for the team all season. They are 21st in ERA, 12th in opposing batting average, and 23rd in WHIP. Relief Pitcher Reed Garrett and Starting Pitcher Luis Severino are tied for the team lead with seven victories. Severino leads the team with a solid 3.58 ERA. The bullpen of the Mets has struggled in 2024. They are in the bottom third of the league in bullpen ERA. The Mets bullpen, to their credit, fared well tonight against a high-powered Yankees offense. They surrendered one earned run over four innings of work.

Mets Upcoming Schedule

The Mets finish up their two-game series with the New York Yankees tomorrow night before welcoming the Atlanta Braves to Citi Field for a four-game series beginning on Thursday. The New York Mets have done a great job clawing their way back into the playoff picture following a miserable start to the 2024 regular season. They must continue playing good baseball to keep pace in the National League wild card race.

If McNeil can continue his hot streak, and regain the form that saw him win batting title just two years ago, it would make what is already a strong New York Mets offense even stronger. New York is looking to make the MLB Playoffs after missing out in 2023.
