With 157 games in the books during the 2024 season, the New York Mets have five games left to determine the fate of their season. The Mets begin a three-game series on the road against the Milwaukee Brewers tomorrow evening. They then head back to Atlanta for a doubleheader on Monday against the Braves. Due to Hurricane Helene, Major League Baseball postponed the final two games of the Mets-Braves series to Monday. The Atlanta area is expected to get pummeled by high winds and heavy rain in the next few days.
The New York Mets safely arrived in Milwaukee as they await the first game of their series with the Brewers tomorrow. With the MLB Playoffs scheduled to get underway Tuesday, whichever ballclubs end up qualifying will have mere hours to regroup for postseason play. Will the New York Mets qualify for the playoffs and how will they fare over the season’s final five games?
New York Mets In The Driver’s Seat For Playoffs
The New York Mets(87-70) occupy the second National League Wild Card spot. They are mere percentage points ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks who are in the third spot in the wild card race. New York is also only one game clear of the Atlanta Braves in the standings. Before the final two games of their series were postponed, Atlanta defeated the Mets 5-1 on Tuesday. New York is in on such solid footing due to a strong last few months. They must not let all of this hard work go to waste by stumbling as they near the finish line.
New York has a 77.6% chance to make the MLB Playoffs according to FanGraphs while Atlanta has a 61.7% chance and Arizona has a 60.8% chance. The Mets have a tough remaining schedule but have fortunately built themselves a cushion going into the final few days of the regular season.
Each Team’s Remaining Schedule
While the New York Mets had to fly to Milwaukee and then back to Atlanta Sunday evening, the Braves can remain at the friendly confines of Truist Park for the remainder of the 2024 season. Atlanta welcomes the Kansas City Royals to town for a three-game set beginning tomorrow evening. Both ballclubs are in the thick of the playoff race as the Royals are tied with the Detroit Tigers for the second wild card spot.
The Diamondbacks have a day off today before they welcome the San Diego Padres for a three-game set to close out the season beginning tomorrow. San Diego still has much to play for over the final weekend of the season as they still have a chance to chase down the Los Angeles Dodgers for the NL West crown. Regardless of which teams make the MLB Playoffs this season, the New York Mets, Arizona Diamondbacks, or Atlanta Braves the final few games of the regular season will be thrilling.
