According to MLB.com Insider Anthony DiComo, New York Mets Starting Pitcher Sean Manaea, 32, has decided to opt out of the final year of his contract. Manaea signed a two-year $28 million contract with the New York Mets in January of 2024 with a player option of $13.5 million for 2025. The veteran lefty had a career resurgence in “The Big Apple” in 2024. New York will extend Manaea a qualifying offer which is a one-year contract worth $21.05 million. Manaea is expected to reject this offer.
Manaea finished 2024 with a 12-6 record and a 3.47 ERA. He was top 20 in the league during the regular season in ERA, strikeouts, and WHIP. Manaea also pitched well in the 2024 MLB Playoffs where the New York Mets advanced to the NLCS before losing to the eventual champion Los Angeles Dodgers. He was 2-1 with a 4.74 ERA. Unfortunately for Manaea, his final start of the year did not go well. He was roughed up in Game 6 of the NLCS where he surrendered five earned runs over two innings of work. This poor start sent New York into the offseason. Will Manaea re-sign with the New York Mets this offseason?
New York Mets Face An Important Offseason
News: Sean Manaea intends to opt out of the $13.5 million option on his contract, per source.
No surprise there, as Manaea is likely to receive significant multi-year interest on the open market.

Manaea opting out is the first domino for an offseason that will be critical for the New York Mets. This decision was not unexpected as Manaea will look to parlay his strong 2024 regular season into a lucrative long-term contract with any MLB team. According to Spotrac, Manaea is projected to command $14 million per year on the open market. Even though Manaea should be a priority for the team this offseason the New York Mets have bigger issues to handle first.
The first decision the team must come to this offseason is if they want to re-sign First Baseman Pete Alonso. Another big decision for Owner Steve Cohen and President of Baseball Operations David Stearns is how involved the ballclub wants to be in the Juan Soto sweepstakes. Once New York decides how they want to handle these two players, Manaea and the rest of New York’s free agency can take shape.
Manaea is one of three members of New York’s starting rotation that will be free agents. He joins Jose Quintana and Luis Severino on the open market. This trio accounted for 33 wins during the regular season. The New York Mets were eighth in ERA, second in opposing batting average, and fifth in strikeouts. Manaea, Quintana, and Severino were a big part of that.
Final Thoughts
The New York Mets will look to build upon a 2024 season that saw them two wins away from making the 2024 World Series. This decision by Manaea will allow him to cash in for one more lucrative contract. New York may start Manaea’s free agency in the pole position. He had this to say following the conclusion of New York’s postseason run. “I love my time here. I love New York. I love the organization. I love all the people here.”
