New York Mets President Bullish On 2024 Offseason

The New York Mets have a clear plan for the 2024 offseason.

New York Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns addressed the media on Wednesday regarding the team’s 2024 season and their plans for the 2024 MLB Offseason. The New York Mets had a great 2024 season that lasted until the NLCS. They were bested by the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games. With the season now in the rearview mirror, Stearns and the rest of the New York Mets will shift their focus to a critical offseason.

Mets Owner Steve Cohen has shown he will spare no expense when it comes to spending money and fielding a competitive ballclub. That fact should create excitement for Mets fans since they have an owner who is not afraid to spend money. What moves will Stearns make this offseason as he looks to build upon the best season by the team in nearly a decade?

New York Mets Offseason Prognosis

When Stearns addressed the media yesterday he gave Mets fans a peak into what he believes the offseason will be like. “We also have to recognize that we want to set up our organizational pattern so that we can invest in free agency, invest where we think we need to, to complement the club on an annual basis. We have a lot of money coming off the books. I would expect us to spend some of that, a good portion of that to complement our team and improve our team heading into next year.” These comments from Stearns illustrate that he will not be resting on his laurels from a 2024 season that went better than expected.

New York had the league’s highest payroll in 2024 and will do so again if necessary. As Stearns alluded to, New York’s payroll is 10th in the league heading into next season with the contracts from Starting Pitchers Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer not factoring into 2025’s payroll. The Mets dealt Verlander and Scherzer at the 2023 MLB Trade Deadline to shed large contracts and get young prospects back as they looked to build toward a successful future. This season was looked at as a rebuilding year with 2025 being the year where the team would be back to full strength.

With the New York Mets coming off a trip to the NLCS, the timeline was moved up a year. The New York Mets have many key free agents this offseason, but their most pressing issue is what to do with First Baseman Pete Alonso. Alonso, 29, has been a cornerstone of the team since he debuted in 2019. Both Alonso and Stearns have expressed their intentions to work out a contract to keep the slugger in Queens for the remainder of his career. There will be a bidding war for Alonso’s services, and Alonso has made it clear he does not intend to give the New York Mets a “hometown discount” of sorts.

Another Big Fish On New York’s Radar

Another marquee player New York is rumored to be in the sweepstakes for is New York Yankees Right Fielder Juan Soto. Soto’s contract will be astronomical and it may come down to a bidding war by the cross-town rivals. During his tenure as owner, Cohen rarely fails to sign a player he desperately wants. The comments made by Stearns echo those sentiments. If Cohen decides that Soto is the missing piece for the New York Mets in 2025 and beyond, he will play his home games at Citi Field in 2025.

Final Thoughts

The comments by Stearns, and the history of Cohen, show the 2024 offseason will be an active one for the New York Mets. Regardless if the New York Mets can re-sign Alonso, sign Soto, or sign a mix of current players and free agents, New York is excited about what 2025 has in store.
