The New York Mets got off to as bad of a start as possible this evening in Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Round. Three batters into the bottom of the first inning and New York was already down 1-0 thanks to an RBI single by William Contreras. New York Mets Starting Pitcher Luis Severino would continue to struggle in the bottom of the first. He would load the bases and hit First Baseman Rhys Hoskins for Milwaukee’s second run of the inning. He limited the damage to only two runs.
A two-run triple by NY Designated Hitter Jesse Winker and a Sac Fly by Right Fielder Starling Marte handed the Mets a 3-2 lead after the top of the second inning. The back-and-forth nature of this ballgame would continue when Milwaukee put up two runs in the bottom of the fourth. New York’s offense exploded, and put the Brewers away, by scoring five runs in the top of the fifth. New York took Game 1 8-4. Will the Brewers be able to force a winner-take-all Game 3 or will New York complete the sweep tomorrow night?
New York Mets Play a Complete Game To Clinch Victory
The New York did a little bit of everything to win Game 1 this evening. They were powered by both timely hitting and stellar pitching tonight in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Severino, who was not at his best tonight, turned in a respectable start. He surrendered four earned earned runs over six innings of work. Luckily for him, the New York Mets offense provided him with massive run support this evening. Once Severino was pulled, the New York Mets bullpen tossed three scoreless innings.
The pitching staff had to work around traffic on the basepaths all evening as the Brewers went 4-of-13 with RISP. They retired the final 16 batters of the game to clinch the victory. New York’s offense also had a stellar night and rose to the occasion when it was required in this game. New York went 5-of-7 with RISP and had a balanced offensive approach. Third Baseman Mark Vientos, Winker, and Designated Hitter J.D. Martinez all had two RBI this evening. After struggling at times this season against Milwaukee’s pitching staff, the Mets offense picked a great game to crack the code.
Looking Ahead To Game 2
The New York Mets will send Starting Pitcher Sean Manaea(12-6, 3.27 ERA) to the mound tomorrow evening. He had a stellar regular season as he was 20th in the league in ERA, 19th in strikeouts, and 11th in WHIP. Mnaaea faced Milwaukee in his last start and fared miserably. He surrendered six runs(five earned) in one of his worst starts of the year. He will need to pitch better tomorrow night for the New York Mets to avoid a Game 3 on Thursday.
Milwaukee will send Joel Payamps to the mound with their season on the line. He is a relief pitcher which means Brewers Skipper Pat Murphy will turn tomorrow night’s game into a bullpen game for his team. Milwaukee is in a rough position as they do not have any healthy starting pitchers to use in Wednesday’s game. Game 2 will have both teams playing it like it is a must-win. Milwaukee needs to win to extend their season and the New York Mets want to avoid a do-or-die Game 3.
