The New York Mets defeated the Chicago White Sox 2-0 this afternoon to finish off a three-game sweep over the worst team in Major League Baseball. A solo home run by New York Mets Shortstop Francisco Lindor to lead off the top of the fourth inning got the scoring started this afternoon on the South Side of Chicago. It was his 29th home run of the season. Mets Right Fielder Starting Marte added an RBI double in the top of the ninth inning to officially put the game out of reach for Chicago.
Neither offense was able to gain much traction today as the ballclubs combined for nine hits. New York had seven while Chicago had only two. New York Mets Closer Edwin shut the door by setting Chicago down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning with three strikeouts. It was his 16th save of the season and his second of this series. Will the New York Mets be able to carry this momentum into their games next week?
Both Starting Pitchers With Marvelous Performances
Both of the starting pitchers in this game are the aces of their respective staffs, and they lived up to that billing this afternoon. New York Mets Starting Pitcher Sean Manaea tossed 7.1 scoreless innings and punched out five. He secured his 11th win of the season and lowered his ERA to 3.35 on the season which is 16th in the league.
White Sox Starting Pitcher Garrett Crochet was great during the limited time he remained in the game. Crochet was pulled after only 57 pitches today. He struck out eight over 3.1 innings of work and surrendered his lone earned run to Lindor. Even though it was a short-lived appearance for Crochet, he made an impact in his start. He struck out the first seven batters he faced today. That tied a Chicago White Sox record for the most consecutive strikeouts to start a game.
Crochet was presumably pulled from today’s game as the Chicago White Sox look to manage his workload over the final month of the regular season. His 132 innings is by far the most he has thrown in his Major League career.
New York Mets Upcoming Schedule
The New York Mets begin a three-game series on the road against the Boston Red Sox tomorrow night. New York sits 1.5 games back of the Atlanta Braves for the third and final National League Wild Card spot. Atlanta faces the Philadelphia Phillies later tonight in the final game of the Sunday slate. If NY can continue playing well they may have a September to remember in Flushing.
