Less than a week into the season, the New York Mets have lost yet another starting pitcher to injury. Tylor Megill suffered a shoulder strain, and the team placed him on the 15-day injured list on Monday. Subsequently, the New York Mets will have to reach further into their starting pitcher depth with Megill down.
New York Mets Plagued by Injury
In Megill’s MLB season debut on Sunday, he only lasted four innings. Megill was able to throw a less-than-average 78 pitches. He recorded a 1-2-3 frame in the fourth inning and recorded four strikeouts before reporting a tender shoulder feeling to the New York Mets coaching staff. Megill downplayed his injury by labeling it as “not too serious”. He said he first felt a pull and tightness with his shoulder after throwing a curveball to the first batter during the fourth inning. Megill claimed the pain wasn’t significant. Throughout the inning, he said his shoulder continued to get tighter.
When asked about his shoulder injury, he said:
“It just hit me out of nowhere”. “Been feeling good, feeling great. Threw one pitch, and all of a sudden, a little tightness. It sucks.”
The New York Mets are already down Kodai Senga, who is their number one pitcher, and David Petersen because of injuries. Senga started the season on the injured list with a moderate strain in the back of his shoulder. Unfortunately, they will now have to place Megill on the injured list with a shoulder strain.
New York Mets Relieved by Righty Reed Garrett
The New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza called Megill’s injury a low-level strain. He was sent for an MRI on Monday. As of now, the Mets have yet to officially announce the duration of Megill’s sidelining. However, it has been said that Megill will be shut down for approximately five days before they reassess the situation.
Furthermore, to replace Megill on the active roster, the Mets recalled right-handed reliever, Reed Garrett. Garrett was called up to provide short-term assistance in the bullpen. This was after Yohan Ramirez went out due to his two-game suspension. The New York Mets started the season 0-3 and didn’t receive any quality starts from their rotation during the opening series.
